a little under 2 years ago, my lady and i went and got a cat.
she is a very capricious, playful little asshole.
im sure some of you recall my attempts to catch her "kung fu fighting" on video.....

her whole life, she has been an indoor cat. we never allowed her to go outside on our balcony, as she tends to forget her environment when she is chasing bugs (her favorite hobby), and we were afraid she would jump right off the terrace.

we have taught her to sit and fetch. she is a very intelligent cat. :)

today, my lady, myself, and a friend of ours went and had a picnic, and we had the idea of taking our cat with us (we have had a special harness for her, but never had the opportunity to use it).

we were outside for about 5 hours in a fairly moderate temperature...it was a bit sunny.

about a half hour after we got home, our cat began acting strangely. she ran a full 2 times in a circle around our room, and then basically jumped down a flight of stairs to the main floor of the apartment. she landed on her head, and began convulsing. she had the seizure for about 2 minutes, got up whilst convulsing, and ran directly into a wall. she freaked out for another few minutes, and then was pretty normal....she was yelling (normal for her) and disoriented, and seemed afraid of the stairs...a sign she hadnt been "brain damaged".

needless to say, we took her to a vet and he gave her a perfectly clean bill of health.
he stuck her with a rectal thermometer, smeared goo on her face (some sort of salve), and gave her a shot of some sort of anti-allergen (he said this was probably what caused it...grass pollen or something).

needless to say, it was the worst day of my cat's life.
lets all hope that she (or us for that matter) never has to experience it again.
the kitty is my baby, i dont know what i would do without her!

If your cat started convulsing and leaping off of stairs, I doubt she's healthy. The doctor probably isn't a kitty brain surgeon or anything. The thing might have a tumor or some shit. Better take her to a specialist.

ive done some reading this evening, and i believe him actually.
i dont think it was pollen though, i think it was the stress of her day outside (she has never even been outside, other than when we have taken her in her carrier box to an automobile).

apparently, this is quite common. i found several sites dedicated to the topic right away.

I'm sure kitty will be fine. My dog got stressed out and acted strange a couple of years ago at Christmas. It was far too hot in the house, he'd probably been fed chocolate by a kid (grr..) and he was being harassed. He climbed the stairs, which was pretty impressive considering he's fairly bad at moving around, and lay down for some peace. I used it as an excuse to stay with him and away from family and the boredom of a family Christmas. And there was the time he got stung on the nose by a wasp. The wasp owned him. Poor dog :( but heh, it was quite funny. He was feeling a little sorry for himself after he stopped freaking out.

this was my first thought actually..with my kitty's penchant for hunting bugs of all types, i figured she got stung by a wasp (they are making their first appearances around here this year) or bitten by a spider, or something of the sort.

she is sitting a 2 feet from me now, napping as if it never happened.

but then again...thats kind of how she is.

Dogs are especially fond of eating anything they find lying around, but cats will do it too. Especially a cat that has always been indoors and doesn't recognize anything. It's very easy to ingest something poisonous that will cause a petit mal and then flush out of her system.

My dog just did the same thing. He was chewing on the old sheepskin throw that I've been using for a bathmat. I didn't really pay any attention to it except to tell him to stop when I was home, so he only did it when I was not home. He had a small seizure and I realized that they treat animal hides with all kinds of horrible chemicals. Even the rawhide toys they sell specifically for dogs are not particularly safe. He's fine now.

I'm sure your cat will be too.

that is actually a common cause of seizures as well (flea bites).

its actually pretty funny (and quite a relief i might add) what she is doing right now......tearing our downstairs couch up with her claws.
i cant bring myself to go yell at her. im just happy she is ok.

I'll relate to you my experience with this type of injury. You must take care not to overlook anything, I doubt you'd be able to locate a problem right now even if MRI'd but seriously listen to this...

We lived in an apartment many years ago, when I was very young. My cat was there naturally and she was playing on the house. My parent thought to let her on the balcony to relax, it was so done... the difficulty was she fell right off without anyknowledge there wasn't level ground! Ploop she went, hit this thingie protruding from the wall (heater etc) and then landed on her feet. Trouble is she fell like 3 stories, so I feared for this pussy's life. Long story short I'd seen how she had fallen, she hit the metal thingie (that was hollow) on her side, I believe her kidneys to have been there. So years later she died of kidney disease, although before it got to seriously horrible we put her to sleep. It was the greatest loss of my life and I'll never forget my cat!

So in effect I believe these types of injuries will show up later in conditions that we don't expect.

If a cat dies from organ failure many years afther the incident it's pretty safe to say that there is no direct link.

my cat is back to attacking me when im not looking, and screaming at me every time i go into the kitchen (where we keep her cat treats).

It was just a stress because of new environment.

Beware Cats do jump off from balconies , they have greate focus on their prey (bugs birds), so dont let your Cat alone near heights without safety railing or something below.

Naa, just pay some money to the humans living on the below floor and tell them to put a extra large perfectly horizontal Sun/Rain shade under your Balcony. ie. if u love your cat.

cats are awesome creatures. They are noble, intelligent, and very huggable. We should embrace nature for creation of such species. purrr

Poor baby. I love cats. I hope it is OK. Keep a close eye on her/him. My Lucy is 18 years old now. My sweet companion for so long through so much. I'd be devastated if I lost her. It hurts just to think about it.
