    what's the difference?

can they work both on the same machine? Is that recommended?

Do they use the same network? Are contacts automaticly coppied if you install the other?

Is one better than the other?

Are they compatible? I mean: one pc using msn messenger and the other windows messenger.

    Is Snickers better than Twix?

    Thank you.

Uhm...I've always thought that they were the same thing except the Windows one comes with Windows.

And yes, Snickers is better than Twix

I like Twix better than Snickers. I'm not a big nuts fan.

No... Windows messenger seems to be designed for Windows XP... but I need to have all the information.

Yes, they do. That's all I can answer for now. Seeing as they can copy the contacts over you might want to assume that they use the same network as well.

That's all you can answer? Come on! Twix is the best of the two!

No, thank you, valuable information there... If you can come up with more, I'd be even happier.

    I don't really like either. I am a coffee crisp/eatmore guy.

    And as for the rest:

    The name.

Yes, and I don't think that you can login using the same passport account, but I do believe they can be run at the same time.

Yes they use the same network. The contacts are not stored on your local computer. They are stored on a MS server somewhere so if you login with one passport account on one of the two messengers you will see the same contacts as if you had logged into the other.

I like the new MSN messenger 5.x with the Messenger Plus! addon which can be found here .

Windows messenger can only be found on windows XP I believe. So therefore you won't be able to run it on anything earlier than XP. MSN messenger however can be run on any version of windows other than win 3.x (not sure about NT).

one is msn messenger on a non xp operating system, one is msn messenger on a windows xp operating system

#can they work both on the same machine? Is that recommended?

you cannot install msn on xp. you cannot find an installer for windows messenger to install it on an non xp machine. qed.

#Do they use the same network? Are contacts automaticly coppied if you install the other?

they are the same thing, in as far as a metallic blue bmw 3 series is the same as a fire-red bmw 3 series. contacts are stored on the server so it matters not which you use to log onto the microsoft instant messengeing network. contacts are never copied anywhere, and you cannot "install the other"

#Is one better than the other?

    is a metallic blue bmw m3 better than a fire-red bmw m3?

#Are they compatible? I mean: one pc using msn messenger and the other windows messenger.

every one of your contacts in msn, that uses windows xp as an ooperating system, talks to you using windows messenger. i know it seems like a hard concept to grasp, but its kinda like asking if your mum is compatible with your dad.. they look different but they both speak english and hence communicate

    #Is Snickers better than Twix?

    not for nut allergy sufferers

    #Thank you.

    welcome

sorry cjard, but I got to follow you here too. I HAVE indeed installed MSN messenger on XP even while Windows messenger was installed (mainly because I wasn't aware that windows messenger came with XP to begin with). Maybe it was just a fluke.

You guys seem to disagree about the two working together on one XP machine. But since Testify didn't have problems, and since msn messenger can be uninstalled, it seems that they can be used together on one machine. Right?

    Thanks for the info.

yes but theres no point.. for the same reason that you wouldnt buy a metallic blue BMW M3, and a fire-red BMW M3

the only difference, i suppose, is that you cant drive 2 cars at once, but you can log in twice to msn messenger. there are alternative clients and hacks for msn that let you do this. one is the polygamy hack for msn mesenger, others are trillian (alternative client. better in my opinion) and miranda (alternative client, not as polished, but more polygamous than either trillian or msn)

I second that. I wouldn't have gotten trillian if Avatar didn't tell me so.

^ awww.. the trillian chanting has started without me.. lol.

why would you not want trillian? do you like having 5 programs running at one time? Or do you prefer the cozy feeling of ICQ resting its wide rear end on your hard drive?

But anyway, I don't use trillian simply because sometimes AOL likes to change their service in a way that disables some of the AIM features on anything except for the real AIM client. PLUS, I don't think there is a Trillian for Linux, which is my main desktop everywhere except work.

anyhow, i do know what you mean about AOL, but it is easy to fix. Its seems like once a month something happens with AIM that causes it to close trillian. sooo.. if you just unlick "auto connect at startup", you wont have any problems with it. then just wait till AIM is working properly again.

As for trillian with Linux, i really couldn't tell ya. the word linux scares me... my computer is very delicate, any sudden changes and it may never speak to me again.

Well the only two things I would use trillian for is IRC and MSN. For what I use both for I would prefer to use a true IRC client and a semi-hacked (but original) MSN.
