View Full Version : more dimensions? kingcarrot 03-23-07, 01:39 AM ive heard there is more than 4 dimensions. anyone care to explain? BenTheMan 03-23-07, 08:58 AM Well, no one can rule out there being more than four dimensions, if they are sufficiently small. The easiest way to think of it is like this: if you are walking along a tightrope, you could only move forwards or backwards. This means that to you, the tightrope is effectively one dimensional. That is, if I asked you "where are you on the tight rope?", you would say "I am three meters from the end." The fact that you can specify your position with one number means that you are moving along one dimension. If, however, you were an ant, you could move more than just forwards and backwards, you could move around as well. In this sense, just because you are small affords you an extra degree of freedom in your movement. If I asked "where is the ant?", you would have to give me two numbers telling me where it was. If there are more dimensions, then they must be small, so small that we don't see them. But something like a sub-atomic particle will see the small dimensions, and the other dimensions will effect the properties of that particle. If you want to know more, you can ask some more questions, or you can check out one of the good popular books around. The best one I have read is by Brian Greene, "The Elegant Universe", which you should be able to find for less then ten bucks. |
