What I was amazed at is how many hits it took to sink the Yamato and even the Musashi

Although there is the story of an incredible kamikaze pilot that struck the USS Enterprise CV-6 and put her out for the rest of the war which would end in a month. The pilot was making his run but didnt dive, he was like 500 feet over the ocean and was running towards the enterprise from behind her and was off at an angle to the Enterprise's right, so relative to the enterprise the pilot was coming from like a bearing of 160 degrees. The pilot got close within a 1000 feet and after the flak was fire they stopped firing and moved to other enemy kamikazes figuring this one was too close to dive, the pilot turned on his back and pulled up and it flung him down straight bulls eye on the forward elevator blowing it a few hundred feet in the air. Without a forward elevator to take planes landing to the hanger deck they must use the middle elevator and turning the plane around and running it back to the middle takes much more time.

yah, I always found it interesting. Though, kamikazes were actually pretty awful as weapons. The reason why is because in order to resist artillery shells the tops of ships had armor. To defeat the armor bombs would have a delayed explosion where they would penetrate the deck of the ship and go down a few floors and than explode. The physical planes used by kamikazes had too much surface area to mass and they would hit the deck and explode. There would be heavy damage to the deck, but practically no damage anywhere that mattered, like the engine room or below the water line. There are stories of ships getting hit with dozens of kamikazes and surviving.

Yah, my dad and I made up that joke when we were watching on the history channel a documentary called dog fights and part of it was on kamikaze's. :P
