    To answer your question about umlauts in the "Dialect Vs. Language" thread, try using ASCII code keystrokes (The computer will only recognize the numbers from the number pad):
    Ctrl+0228 = ä
    Ctrl+0235 = ë
    Ctrl+0239 = ï
    Ctrl+0246 = ö
    Ctrl+0252 = ü
    There's plenty of others here: http://www.starr.net/is/type/altnum.htm
    There's also Greek letters, math symbols, etc. Try googling: ASCII code.
    If you want Microsoft Word to use certain spellings (such as paté), then invent a unique spelling (such as patee) and go into the AutoCorrect Options in the Tools dropdown menu, and for example, have it replace patee with paté.
