It's not very efficient to get suck in the mud and snow.

It pisses me off when people can't express themselves through writing.

Especially if it's at a job, and the things she tells things and expects me to understand what she means. Well if you can't write what you mean, how the fuck am I supposed to understand that shit??

She contradicts herself all the time. Doesn't answer questions. Writes words that don't express what she means.

I mean COME ON. She takes up SO much of my time because she can't fucking write

I mean take a second and reread what you wrote, at the least!

i couldnt agree more when it comes to city-dwellers who drive to the shop in them and wash them once a week, but when you need to drive somewhere on the farm and take someone with you(otherwise i would just use a motorbike) they are a necessity.

Hmm, but 4x4's can go where other cars can't go ....snow, mud, rocks, etc. So ....in those areas, they're lots more "efficient" than other cars which wouldn't even move, and thus would be extremely IN-efficient.

Blanket statements without qualifiers are often not worth making.

Surprisingly a lot of these 4x4s that are on commercials driving down mountains and through jungles are actually extremely ill-equipped to go off road. It's a selling point with almost no basis in reality.

Most SUVs don't have serious off road capability. I hear the land rover was one of the few that actually did. The original Hummer of course has off road capability. I'd guess some of the older Jeep models did too. I don't have extensive knowledge on these particulars though. I don't even think most SUVs are designed for any serious off road driving in mind, despite the marketing. They're soccer mom vehicles nowadays.

I had a kind of funny personal experience illustrating this once. There was some road work being done right outside my apartment's parking lot exit and there was >1 foot drop off on to dirt from the cement exit at some point, and my most hated neighbor damaged his Ford F150 and Ford Explorer trying to get out to work (he really deserved it too). Ironically, I could get out in my 2001 Saturn SL-1 when the drop off was only a little less.

Interesting. I own a wrangler and an expedition. The wrangler has been off road (seriously off road) many times. Did you know that Jeep covers off road damage under their warrantee? As for the expedition, I've pulled a number of stuck people out of snow and mud with it.

I guess your experiences might be a bit atypical?

My experiences are extremely limited but I don't know about atypical, though perhaps the minority. I should clarify my original statement since "off road" could be a smooth dirt track or something. I meant "off road" in the way they often go/give the impression of in commercials. Like this: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...on.jpg/800px-Land_Rover_trial_competition.jpg

About pulling people out of the snow... that does not surprise me. I'm sure almost all SUVs can.

edit: I guess I had mostly luxury SUVs in mind when saying this.

My dual purpose Kawasaki Super Sherpa gets 75mpg, and can go anywhere a mountain bike can.

well as exhumed pointed out, hardly any of the new 'yank tanks' as we call them, since they arent really 4wds, have offroad capability anyway. it makes no difference to the people who would consider buying something that flashy anyway.

Well, he is driving a Ford. Ford's suck.

I had an ex-girlfriend who couldn't drive her big red truck (Ford or Dodge) through puddles fast, because the mechanics told her the water was spraying up and damaging her breaks or something.

But if you live anywhere that has winters with a lot of snow and ice (ie, Alaska), 4x4s are practically a necessity. If you don't like skidding through intersections into oncoming traffic, that is.

Must be one old, old truck! Disc brakes have been standard equipment brakes on pickup trucks for years ....and on the front wheels for, like, a gazillion years or so! Yep, damned old trucks like that shouldn't be driven thru anything, much less mud puddles! ...LOL!

Think about it for a second; most cars and trucks have four wheels, right? And most cars and trucks have brakes on all four wheels, right? So ....how does four-wheel DRIVE make stopping any better/different???

It was new, like a '99 or '00 model. I was pretty incredulous when she told me. Maybe she didn't understand her mechanic right. Maybe the puddles were goofing something else up. Which still doesn't make sense.

But then, who buys American vehicles anymore?

    Who's talking about braking?

i like american styled cars from the 1970-1988 era, the australian made ones work far better than those actually made in america, but i have yet to see a japanese car that can match the look of an XE fairmont.
