For morbidly obese people the adjustable gastric band is proving itself a reliable and safe method.
I don't think any pill works long term.

It's the classic "free trial" scam. It works with everything from acai berries to porn sites. They offer you a "free trial" of the product...you only have to pay for shipping...Then they charge your credit card for hundreds or thousands of dollars later.

Notice that the site you linked is pretending to be an page from some news channel...to make it look like some kind of unbiased report. That should send up red flags.

In the 1800's there was a weight loss pill that contained a tape worm egg. You ate it and the worm hatched. After a while you would begin to lose weight. This went on until you had the tapeworm killed, so it did indeed "work" long term to cause you to lose weight, not that I would recommend this one.

What does a tapeworm do when it wants to lose weight?

Well, since they are segmented worms that continue to grow as long as the host eats, they just sort - of drop off the end segments when they get too close to the exit. That drops the unwanted weight instantly.

Here's a simple rule that will work every time. Bear in mind that enormous sums of money are spent on advertising. In a surplus-driven economy, coaxing people into buying things they haven't even thought about is one of our biggest industries. The U.S. economy toggled from scarcity-driven to surplus-driven around 1895, and that is when advertising became commonplace. Christmas as we know it--an excuse to buy things for people who didn't even know they needed them--is a creation of the advertising industry.

So every advertisement has been reviewed by many different people from many different perspectives. By the time it is published it has been deemed "perfect" by several people whose job it is to ensure that advertisements are, indeed, perfect.

So: if after all that, the ad doesn't strike you as being completely legitimate, what does that say about the subject matter? This is the best they could do with it!

    Good rule that...

As regards diet pills: there's two general categories they seem to fall into...One, the over the counter kind that do, at best, a small amount of good, and still are not even remotely a substitute for calorie-cutting and exercise.

Two, the kind that come out to be used only under a physician's supervision, are on the market for a bit, then are usually found to cause unacceptable rates of heart disease/attacks, and they get removed.

Fast weight loss is supposed to put a strain on the heart...although I can't remember exactly what the mechanism is...
    Maybe muscle wasting?
But then add a drug with speedlike side effects, and there is a problem.
This is why I'm guessing that weight-loss drugs based on stimulants are never going to be safe for weight loss. There is research into a cannabinoid receptor blocker...yep, an anti-munchie drug.

While pills can help in a small way to suppress appetite and raise energy level-really useful for working out an hour a day on 1500 calories or less...the pills are only a weak crutch, at best.
And the brand-name over-the-counter diet pills mostly have stuff that if not sold as a weight-loss pill, but bought as an individual capsule, is going to be way cheaper. If you must try the weight-loss supplements, try the ingredients one at a time-a safer approach anyway.
People seem to think because it's natural and a plant, it's safer. Datura and nightshade are plants. Arsenic's natural.

Do your homework, know fully well the adverse reactions possible, because a supplement won't generally tell you what side-effects or interactions you're going to get. I add one at a time and take notes daily for a while.

I'd just drink a lot of white tea. Affordable and (as far as I know) confirmed to help curb appetite(a bit ) and speed metabolism (a bit).

There will be a weight loss pill in due course, that really works, and causes only minimal side effects. It will work by suppressing appetite. I know this because I read of the research teams working on the problem. For example : there is a herb in Africa used by the San people to suppress hunger pangs in time of food shortage. It really works, though not without side effects.

I predict within ten years an effective appetite suppressing pill will be available for human trials. Not too much later, obese people will be using them and losing weight.

However, we don't got 'em now!

I suspect that any "true" weight-loss pill would reduce appetite and incite a strong desire to exercise beyond maintenance calories without any declining effectiveness over the long term. However, in the end, our bodies don't respond well to artificial means to regulate our metabolism and habits. But, it seems that we try to in order to make up for the shit we inflict our bodies with. All-in-all, the most effective way to lose weight (and I hope we're talking just fat here) is to eat healthier and do what our bodies were built to do-move. My best bet for a "magic pill" is either a placebo or a dose of reality.

Have you ever seen someone become a crackhead? They lose weight pretty fast and keep it off until they discontinue use of the supplement. You'll never see the same type of results from hydroxycut.

And they usually sustain heart damage. That and have a really funny reaction if you throw clumps of baking soda on a deep-pile carpet.

The tv news said this morning that gastric bypass surgery is very much more effective than the lap band surgery for weight loss.

I am going to stick to my healthy diet and moderately strenuous (2 - 3 hours a day) exercise program - the one I have been following for about 35 years now. My weight remains the same as it was about 25 years ago, though I am a bit more muscular now than I used to be.

A bit of serious effort and playing by the rules may be a better bet than waiting for someone to invent a pill to do that for you.

    Just sayin.....

The title of this thread reminds me of something that frustrates me about the concept of "new technology" being discovered.

A pill or any medication is composed of an active ingredient or several active ingredients -- so the concept of "discovery of a pill" seems a bit bizarre since the pill is a single implementation of whatever active ingredients were developed.

You could say that someone discovered a new chemical called "fatassgoneawayzotrine", and 500 mg dose causes dramatic increase in metabolic rate - resulting in massive weight loss. However, the method of transport of most substances is generally oral, respiratory, or direct injection into the blood stream. Furthermore, maybe the oral method could come in different formats (like liquid, paste, etc).

...so at any rate, I think the idea of discovery of a pill is just plain dubious to begin with.
