CheskiChips 12-16-08, 10:24 PM With what? At night I like a glass of dark dry merlot. Especially in the winter, it's such a warm wine. spidergoat 12-16-08, 11:07 PM strawberry draqon 12-16-08, 11:15 PM red wine. Sangria, orange flavored red wine. shaman_ 12-17-08, 12:09 AM As I got to my late twenties I acquired a taste for red wine. I started with Merlot I drank half a bottle of Shiraz last night. I assume it stops being good for you in those quantities. It seems I see a story once or twice a year about red wine being good for you. Of course you could drink grape juice or eat red grapes but people (including me) want to hear about wine being good for you. I wonder how much is spent on research each year to find the benefits of wine and chocolate... cosmictraveler 12-17-08, 06:41 AM Pinon Vouvray Brut Non Dosé draqon 12-17-08, 08:15 AM Pinon Vouvray Brut Non Dosé ...:p prestige royalty here... S.A.M. 12-17-08, 11:39 AM I prefer a nice glass of fresh chilled coconut water myself. But I like the sparkling semi sweet Blue Heron white. And the Da Vinci chianti is pretty good. Barefoot has a nice deep merlot. Medicine*Woman 12-17-08, 09:09 PM Maybe with green vegetables... ************* M*W: Maybe. I know it's not a top shelf brand, but I've always been a cheap date LOL. It may be the way they make it. I've never gotten a headache or any side effects from that label. The problem is, I like it way too much, so I stopped drinking all alcohol. Actually, I didn't drink beer or hard liquor anyway, but I sure miss my wine. I don't get your point about green vegetables, but I'm assuming you mean that Corbett Canyon is as tame as green veggies??? Trust me. It's not! laladopi 12-17-08, 09:16 PM I think he means, that's all it could possible be compatible with. LadyMidnight 12-18-08, 02:13 PM Carlo Rossi sangria. $6 for a 1.5L jug... it has fueled some unforgettable nights! I love all wine, especially red varieties because they're more beneficial as far as health goes. CheskiChips 12-18-08, 04:17 PM What's with all of the hicks in here loving sangria wine? Are you all from Georgia/Virginia/East-Texas or something? tablariddim 12-18-08, 04:44 PM My wine of choice is Merlot. The Chilean ones are usually dependable if a bit dead, but I've had some great Australian and Californian Merlot as well. Some of the most exciting wines I've tried recently are from Croatia and Monte Negro--full of life and seriously complex flavours. laladopi 12-18-08, 09:06 PM Carlo Rossi sangria. $6 for a 1.5L jug... it has fueled some unforgettable nights! I love all wine, especially red varieties because they're more beneficial as far as health goes. an alcohol is not good in excess, alcohol is good for you in general not specifically wine. I don't think wine of all things should be 6 dollars for 1.5 liters it must taste like shit, although if you've never had decent wine or do not care for a good flavored wine then you must be one happy camper with your cheap wine. :p laladopi 12-18-08, 09:07 PM What's with all of the hicks in here loving sangria wine? Are you all from Georgia/Virginia/East-Texas or something? lol! I don't understand it as well. I think the only goal for some is to get drunk and do dumb influenced things, although it may be fun in about 20 years it will show, I defiantly have a couple of friends that will die from liver related ailments. laladopi 12-18-08, 09:08 PM My wine of choice is Merlot. Australian vineyards usually have the best tastes, in my opinion. LadyMidnight 12-18-08, 10:44 PM What's with all of the hicks in here loving sangria wine? Are you all from Georgia/Virginia/East-Texas or something? Actually I live in La Jolla, which is considered one of the most "posh" areas of San Diego. Most people around here look mortified when I break out the Rossi, but I'm a broke-ass college student living on my own scanty means... the cheaper the better! I guess I have very eclectic taste buds and love the cheap stuff, too. But no, all alcohol is NOT created equal. Wine in particular is good because of the antioxidants found in grapes. And red wine is said to be better than white wine because darker grapes have more flavonoids than white grapes. Studies show that wine (specifically) raises HDL levels and prevents blood clots. SkinWalker 12-18-08, 11:12 PM Whites: Riesling and Gewurztraminer (spatlese -or "late picks" are good) Reds: Pinot Noir It is, actually, red wine that is beneficial, not just alcohol in general. But you needn't drink wine to get the effect. You can also drink a good, pure grape juice. The compounds that red wines have (which is absent in white wine, beer, vodka, etc.) are polyphenols. The specific polyphenol compounds are catechin and resveratrol, which are found in the skins of grapes and are used by the plant to fight off invading fungi. The reason you don't get them in white wines is because the skins are removed from the grapes before their crushed. They're left on in red wines during crushing and when the grapes ferment, the alcohol infuses the polyphenols into the final product. I thought the most abundant flavonoids in red wine are resveratrol and QUERCITIN? Maybe catechin is another and I hope it is. Catechin is one of the flavonoids in green tea that make it so good for you. Mmmm, green tea! True, grape juice is delicious and nutritious. But a glass of wine a day is good for the body AND the mind! Fraggle Rocker 12-29-08, 01:38 PM Whites: Riesling and GewurztraminerYeah, my favorites wines are the fruity German whites, especially Mosel. If I have to drink red I'll take Zinfandel, which I assumed was also German (duh?), but the only labels I ever find are from home, California. Turns out it originally came from Croatia. I never cared for White Zinfandel, I'm glad that craze is over. cosmictraveler 12-29-08, 01:42 PM Pinon Vouvray Brut Non Dosé The wines of François Pinon are considered among the finest of Vouvray. François, a former child psychologist, took over the estate from his father in 1987, and has steadily made a name for the estate over the past 10 years. He is a young, serious winemaker whose main focus is "to keep the typicity of both the appellation and the vintage" in all his wines. The vineyards are in the corniche of the Vallée de Cousse in Vernou, the premiers côtes of Vouvray. The soil is clay and silica on a base of limestone (tuffeau) with flint (silex) and the area is rated among the top sites in the appellation for Vouvray of distinction and long life. Pinon follows a discipline of plowing the vineyards, not using chemical fertilizers and pesticides and, of course, he harvests by hand and uses no cultured yeasts. All new plantings are done by selection and no nursery clones are used; the vines are an average of 25 years old. He is certified organic. Price: $21.99 Rick 12-29-08, 03:30 PM Been dry for years now and yes that includes wine, beer or any other thingie. But Sangria is like a juice, never was a wine or beer person, did hard liquor mostly. From health perspective, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resveratrol capsules are available and are perfectly healthy; You don't drink alcohol for health, off course same benefits can be achieved by non alcoholic things available but hey. But is it correct to do so? laladopi 12-30-08, 09:46 PM Yes, why wouldn't it be okay? Hercules Rockefeller 12-31-08, 02:17 AM You benefit from all alcohol, not just specifically wine! although wine does have more benefits than other types. look it up. What? No, I very much doubt that’s correct. By “alcohol” I assume you’re talking about ethanol. It is well-established that methanol has ocular toxicity and will send you blind if you drink it, so I guess you are not talking about that particular alcohol. Ethanol is not good for you regardless of the quantity or the type of drink in which it is consumed. Ethanol is a toxic solvent that has to be detoxified by the liver. That’s not to say that humans cannot tolerate certain amounts – we can. But no amount of ethanol is actually good for the body per se. A standard drink of red wine is hypothesised to be good for you due to various grape-derived compounds in the drink, not because of the ethanol. AFAIK there is no other alcoholic drink that is hypothesised to be good for you in the same way red wine is. (I’m a big fan of Durif (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Durif) and Bordeaux (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bordeaux_wine) red wines. ) Orleander 12-31-08, 08:12 PM Yes, why wouldn't it be okay? Past down in my family from the Mediterraneans. LadyMidnight 01-01-09, 03:23 AM What? No, I very much doubt that’s correct. By “alcohol” I assume you’re talking about ethanol. It is well-established that methanol has ocular toxicity and will send you blind if you drink it, so I guess you are not talking about that particular alcohol. Methanol causes ocular problems? Wow, did not know that. If I remember correctly, methanol was used in certain whiskey drinks back in the day. Maybe it's only toxic in excessive amounts? Then again, any type of alcohol (including the beloved ethanol) is toxic in excess. A standard drink of red wine is hypothesised to be good for you due to various grape-derived compounds in the drink, not because of the ethanol. A recent study also shows that ONE beer a day may promote mental health, particularly in women. Hey, I concur... I drink a beer (or glass of wine) with dinner each night and I'm almost always happy! But yeah, from what we "know" about alcoholic beverages, red wine still takes the cake for being the healthiest. Hercules Rockefeller 01-01-09, 03:49 AM Methanol causes ocular problems? Oh yes, this is well-established. From memory, methanol is metabolised by dehydrogenase enzymes in the liver like ethanol. However, unlike ethanol, one of the metabolites of methanol is formic acid which has a particular toxicity in the optic nerve. Permanent blindness occurs if too much methanol is consumed. I don’t know at what dosage level this occurs. If I remember correctly, methanol was used in certain whiskey drinks back in the day. I don’t think it was ever added intentionally. As I understand it, methanol contamination has always been a problem in backyard distillation setups. You need decent equipment and appropriate know-how in order for your fermentation and distillation process to produce spirits (be it whiskey or whatever) that have only ethanol and not a mixture of ethanol and methanol. Many a hillbilly has gone blind by drinking the product of their illegal ‘still. Then again, any type of alcohol (including the beloved ethanol) is toxic in excess. Indeed. Beer has folate and may reduce cardiovascular diseases! A recent study also shows that ONE beer a day may promote mental health, particularly in women. Now that’s the sort of news I like to hear! :D LadyMidnight 01-01-09, 05:13 AM Oh yes, this is well-established. I did some research on both oxidation products - formaldehyde and formic acid - and both are dangerous to the optic nerve, as well as the respiratory tract. And it could cause cancer. Drink only mild dosages of ETHANOL, people. A beer a day keeps the shrink away! TimeTraveler 01-05-09, 05:05 PM My wine of choice is Merlot. Methanol's main toxicity is due to it being metabolized into formeldahyde and then formic acid, besides being a depressant on the CNS like ethanol is. Anyway, the reason you want to consume ethanol with it is because they both are metabolized by alcohol dehydrogenase, which can either metabolize ethanol or methanol, but not both at the same time. The more ethanol you have in your system, the less likely methanol will be converted into dangerous metabolites. Lots of ethanol if you are getting poisoned by methanol.
