I was reading some google news and came across this morsel:

http://news.google.com/url?sa=t&ct=us/1-0&fp=438b4027f55e1741&ei=wqiLQ93qN4uW6wGOhemjDQ&url=http%3A//news.com.com/Maxell%2bfocuses%2bon%2bholographic%2bstorage/2100-1015_3-5973868.html&cid=1102642487

one thing struck me most of all.
Then combine it with random access, and it's the best of all worlds.
I was wondering if anyone knew how good this holographic ram would be. can it stack up against current ram capabilities?

my money is still on blue-ray, for the next 5 years anyway. (for storage I mean)

i'm thinking optical memory, and sooner or later, optical processors, will be the next thing after electronics. optical systems have more functionality and manipulation potential compared to electronics, and don't heat up as much.

But yeah, this disk is a brand new technology, might not stack up to blue-ray at first.

it will probably be used for archive purposes, something along the line of microfich.i am not aware of any one file larger than about 700mb. a standard cd holds that. then we have dvd which hold (i believe) 4gb.
what else would such large capacity storage be used for if not archive?

That thing might cost more but in the long run, it's actually cheaper since you only need one.
