Are you using XP by any chance? As it sounds like some kind of 'sticky keys',
you turn it on by holding shift for 5-10 seconds then basically it anoys the hell
out of you until you restart your computer

i have restarted, and it's still here. i have also uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers for the keyboard...it's only the bloody shift key[exclamation]. and it is a new keyboard [it's my roommates', but she got it earlier this year].

Have you tried taking the keys off and cleaning it? Its unlikely but
some gunk might be interfering with the keys.

Have you tried searching for an updated driver from the manufacturer?

What type of keyboard is this? It doesnt sound like its generic.

Try uninstalling it, then restart, when a new device is recognised use the
generic windows keyboard driver and see if the shift key works then

Thats all i can think with the details you've given...
Buy a new one if it wont work, the keyboard im using cost about £10 and
i've never had a prob with it

that's the driver that's installed. my roommate can't find the cd that came with the keyboard...the keyboard is a logitech, one of the ones with extra media keys and internet navigation buttons.

the problem is that it's only the 'shift' keys. they don't stick or anything, they just don't do what they are supposed to. they do weird things, like mute the sound in the microsoft sound control, and open the search option at the top of ie. it's just so strange...thanks for the advice so far though. i appreciate you guys taking the time.

On my Trust Keyboard, There is a button that can alter all the F-Keys to do Cut, Paste, Copy etc functions. Perhaps there is some key on the keyboard that has been pressed and turned a light on (Not CapsLock, Scrolllock or Numlock though.)

Well, that may be the case, but the 'shift' key performs random functions that aren't at all beneficial...like those letters in the first post, etc. (I found her old keyboard for now).

Okay, well, I plugged the new one back in, and nothing's wrong with it anymore. Very perplexing to say the least.

    Thanks for the suggestions.
