    The cheek of the man!!!
This is a few days old now but it's not been on here so:

The US Secret service are apparently requesting the UK set up exclusion zones in the UK to prevent anyone getting near the president during his visit to the UK.

I'm sure many of you know about all the indignation that's already been caused by his proposed visit and the planned protests, to the extent that out of "Security Fears" they've had to completly scrap most of his original tour including the open carriage ride.

But he's still going to come down to get pictures of him waltzing round with the Queen and the PM to get some nice photo op's for the up and coming election drive i'm sure.
But no pictures of him shaking hands with the british public or kissing babies this time.

The plans for the "Exclusion Zones" would pretty much shut down several parts of London for his visit and protesters are decrying this as an enroachment on civil liberties and their right to protest.

Whilst the UK is promising they will not give in to pressure to set up these zones they WILL be using Anti-Terrorism laws to force protesters to move on and keep the peace despite their being more than enough power for them to do this without having to resort to "Terrorism charges" against peaceful protesters in a public place...albeit a public place in clear view..and hearing of MR Bush.

They will also be banning protesters from Whitehall and Parliament square (As is common practice).

They will also however be a "Rolling road block" of undetermined size around the presidents cavalcade at all times to allow him to move about freely.
Though i can't recall any other unpopular visitors needing a constant road block around their presence to be able to move about freely?

Its kind of a shame really that at the end of the day he's going to get his nice photo shoots to use in his election showing how "popular" he is in the UK with the queen and PM without the shots of the 1000's of UK citizens outside the window telling him to go home.

Oh and aside from his 700 armed security staff....3 cooks, 25 aides and friends the Prez is bringing with him Scotland yard is assigning ALL it's armed units and i think it was...need to check the numbers 5000 regular police to protect him

The US Security will form a "Bubble" around the president but the UK is denying worrying rumors that they have been / will be granted immunity should they open fire.

This is going to cost the british tax payer £5million for the 3 day visit.

Ridiculous. I'm sure the Bush contingent would be happy to allow them to excercise their rights within a designated fenced-in free speech zone somewhere in the countryside.

Bush's recent trips around the world have been making history as govts resort to amazing and never before gone to lengths to protect him from the masses.

good greif when we start having "Free Speach" zones in the UK then we will have truely reached a new low of lows.

I honestly can't see the british public ever putting up with that though.
Britain has a history of being stubborn over things like that...don't they??

Seems that the 'exclusion zones' may not be extensive as first feared.
Even the local coppers appear to be offering their support!

    More here

Planning to drive down for the day, work permitting, let you know how it goes..

You guys aren't the only ones. Aside from the fashionably new monicker of "Free Speech Zones", designated protesting areas are nothing new in the US.

Over here, they are generally used keep the KKK and gay rights activists from annihilating each other. And of course both sides then rail against the laws, claiming infringement on their first amendment rights. But it's really only done to maintain civil order.

The CIA has also stipulated that it would like its 250 armed agents to be granted impunity from criminal prosecution (just in case).

Given America's record regarding "friendly fire", 250 armed rednecks let loose around London doesn't quite seem like a good idea.

Well, some requests were turned down. To be fair, I think describing the secret service as rednecks is silly, rednecks implies no discipline and little training.

    However, this is sensible news:
"Home Secretary David Blunkett has refused to grant diplomatic immunity to armed American special agents and snipers travelling to Britain as part of President Bush's entourage this week.
In the case of the accidental shooting of a protester, the Americans in Bush's protection squad will face justice in a British court as would any other visitor, the Home Office has confirmed. "

But this is a little worrying:
"The issue of immunity is one of a series of extraordinary US demands turned down by Ministers and Downing Street during preparations for the Bush visit.

These included the closure of the Tube network, the use of US air force planes and helicopters and the shipping in of battlefield weaponry to use against rioters. "

"The Americans had also wanted to travel with a piece of military hardware called a 'mini-gun', which usually forms part of the mobile armoury in the presidential cavalcade. It is fired from a tank and can kill dozens of people. One manufacturer's description reads: 'Due to the small calibre of the round, the mini-gun can be used practically anywhere. This is especially helpful during peacekeeping deployments.' "

So, it looks like reasonable precautions will be taken, not over the top ones.

This is something ive always wondered from day one:

If everyone hates Bush so much, then how come he hasnt been impeached. All it took for Clinton to get nearly thrown out was a blow job, and Bush is doing far worse things than adultery....so wtf?
