So, it seems that we have this crazy Senator Roger Wicker who is talking about starting a nuclear war with Russia.

    One wonders:
What in hell is wrong with that man?

He’s a Republican from the south. You really expect him to be well adjusted or in touch with reality?

Because... you know, that's literally the only thing he mentioned during the interview. And because we all want to sympathize with Russia's own propaganda tactics whenever their delicate sensitivities are offended.

Thank goodness, even after the last 5 years, the majority of people still believe information filtered through ANY news agency is non-distorted, as well as those outlets avoiding super-highlighted, myopic fixations on a particular item to the exclusion of all else.

The question should be "What is wrong with our political system?"

This is what we get, political theater. It's best (although not ideal) to just ignore our political theater and focus on controlling as much of your own life as you can regardless of what is going on in Washington, IMO.

"We don't rule out first use nuclear"

    Just rhetoric?

Yes, because he isn't in charge of that decision.

The senator said nothing of the kind. I watched the clip and what he said seems to me to be a model of (rare) bipartisan good sense.

The point being made is that the posture of the US should be not to take anything off the table, i.e. what is called "strategic ambiguity". That means refusing to give Putin the comfort and security of knowing that there are limits to the extent of US reaction, if he invades.

I suspect too that the senator was well aware that what he said in the interview would also get back to Putin. So I think he was sending Putin a message as well. I noticed for instance that he talked up three things:

    1) that invasion of Ukraine would be seen by the US, not just as a piece of land grabbing in the former USSR, but as a real threat to Western democracy

    2) that there is bipartisan agreement about the threat in the US Congress, i.e. contrary to the impression Putin may have that the US is hopelessly dysfunctional and unable to agree about anything in foreign affairs,

    3) that no form of reaction was off the table: nuclear was only briefly mentioned en passant - but mentioned, to keep Putin off-balance.

All of this was expressed in clear and moderate language. So actually I think it was rather a good piece of statecraft.

Ummmmm not sure Putin would be silly enough to believe America would be crazy enough to start a nuclear war even if Putin made such a stupid land grab

Putin may slow his land grab over sanctions (world wide sanctions) but not a (seriously) empty nuclear war threat

    That's not what anyone suggested.

However one can envisage a number of scenarios in which the US and Russia might eventually get drawn into direct fighting. It would be foolish to unilaterally disavow the threat of a nuclear strike. The moment you do that you might as well not have nuclear weapons. Ambiguity is all.

    OK

I thought the use (or at least the storage of the numbers each have) was to ensure total mutual annihilation regardless of who starts

Think it is called being paranoid if you decide to get rid of yours but fear the enemy will keep theirs

    sounds like a cult leader
    same/same ?
church of the political narcissist ?

i bet he has never truly suffered or worked for anything in his life

imagine how much that would cost
& who is going to pay for it ?
    senators morning tea budget ?

the logistical fact of putting that many troops in 1 place would mean there will be natural casualties by accidents
will all those troops injured & killed get medals ?
& will their family's spouse & estates get life long pensions ?

& what happens if 1 soldier has a psychiatric event & goes rambo into the front line with civilians of the opposing side ?
small town... women children & men found all slaughtered
    whos fault ?
cause to go to war ?
    with who ?

that whole area is a cesspool of mixed ages old wars between Muslims Christians & opposing city states over hundreds if not thousands of years
modern versus old ... etc ...
its like a pile of fireworks

please dont throw a match on it

but if it does go off
whos going to go in there to sort it ?
(certainly not the spoilt privileged ignorant senators shouting war)
    no one but the Russians

soo how does that figure on the reality meter ?

    yeah i got that
    i think he wants war
    suicidal stuff
wants everyone else to do the dying while he live in a working class tax funded ivory tower to watch & play tin soldier games
many like him in the usa
more & more as they age looking for something like war to entertain themselves with & feel "alive" as thousands needlessly die in the fight for his ego manifestation to hide his own fear of fragility, weakens & death & old-age behind.
sociopathic psychopath looking for fear & death transference

There are many russians living there and always have been and both speak same language.
We should stay the fk out.

Does anyone think Russia will invade Eu and force everyone to speak russian? L

Russia is only trying to sell gas n oil and whatever to improve their peoples lives,of course its seen as threath to western economic domination, thats why all the military dk waving .
