    Tasers can reach up to 20 feet. I hear you, if this was the only option. Mixed stories circulating right now, that the girl who was killed was residing in a foster home and was defending herself - but as new details emerge, we'll see.

    Given the momentum, and the fact that she came running out of that house chasing someone with a knife and tried to stab her and then turned around and tried to stab another girl .. A taser would not have done anything. This was a life and death situation for her potential victims.

    If she had not been about to stab anyone, then sure, one could say a taser. But she saw the police officer there and she still turned to try to stab the girl in pink. I don't know what happened in the house that led her to chase the first girl out of the house (some are saying she had called the police as she was being attacked in her house and chased the attacker out).. She wasn't shot when she was attacking the first girl. She was shot when she then turned around and launched herself at the second girl who was holding a small dog in her arms. The gun only came out when he realised she had a knife in her hand, as the first girl went down. He didn't shoot immediately. He shot her when she was about to stab the second girl.

    If she had posed no risk or threat to anyone around her, then yes, a taser would have been a better option. But that wasn't the case in this instance. She was up close and was armed and about to stab someone.

    I am all for reducing use of force, particularly deadly force, but in that instance, I cannot see (from that video at least) that he acted inappropriately or used excessive force.

    You know, I cannot say that I have ever (nor would I ever want to) put myself in a man's shoes and tried to think about how it's okay to keep kneeling on someone's neck until they die and then refuse to move for several minutes because a "crowd" of less than a dozen people (including children) are begging me to remove my knee and telling me that the man's not breathing and unconscious, not to mention not moving after my fellow police officer tells me that there's no pulse.. I can't think like a sociopath because I'm not a sociopath.

    I mean, you can put yourself in his shoes. You do you.

    This makes sense, thanks for clarifying. Interestingly, I just googled ''why do cops choose lethal force over tasers'' and the gist of it is what you're stating here - that if the situation seems to a reasonable person ''life or death'' (either of an officer or people on the scene when officers arrive) then lethal force should be used. And shooting in the leg, etc isn't how police officers are trained, when in such situations. Tasers are used to apprehend a potentially difficult suspect, but not necessarily used in life or death situations. I learned something today on the internet.

    Tasers also have travel time.

    She was in the process of stabbing someone when she was shot. She wasn't threatening her with a knife. She was in the process of stabbing her. That knife got damn close to the second girl when she was shot.

    I'll put it this way, if someone was in the process of stabbing a loved one of mine and a police officer was there, I'd expect the officer to shoot to stop them.

    Same. This is why we discuss, because we all see things a little differently. One thing is for certain, I wouldn't want to be a police officer and have to make such a quick decision like that. Even if using lethal force is justified, I'm sure it takes a toll on cops who have had to use it.

    OK, harping on a bit more it appears the process the jury follows

    establish he is guilty of the lowest charge, all elements, first - then go for the next highest

    So work from the bottom up

    Not from top down

    Interesting, curious with case a bit more complex than this I wonder if a bottom upward or top downward approach would be quicker?

    I don't thinking they are working from bottom or top necessarily. They just have to consider all of the charges and if they accept all of them then they have to read all of them.
