He's more or less admitted that he gets visits from a geriatric psychiatric nurse. So I'm trying not to get too annoyed with him.

Olde but goodie if you can get Oil of cloves, or a clove itself (pull off the spikey bits), use on gum associated with tooth to numb gum
Have been told soak a Panadol with the oil works well

I upset him recently and I don't wish to cause him any upset or be judgemental in the least.

And sorry QQ I am not trying to talk behind your back.

And exchemist may I take this opportunity to thank you for your accounts of your experience I found it somewhat comforting for some reason, perhaps because of your calm and measured approach and sensible manner.

Folk I think are over reacting irrespective of whatever the death rate..it is what it is..but it seems many are happy to indulge doom and gloom.

When I would get stressed with major worries when in business I would tell myself...don't worry this time next year you will look back and laugh...and that is the way it goes.

It is somewhat ironic that like you I questioned what appeared to be an over reaction in another thread and was also ridiculed for doing so by a number of members here at sciforums.
Alas they were right. The governments of the world were not over reacting at all. They were in fact under reacting or so I found out. Once you understand the situation and build or study a few scientific models you realise that what we have today around the globe could have been mitigated significantly if only they, the Governments, had taken their own scientists seriously. They failed to see the gravity of what the world was facing and now the people suffer accordingly.
So now I argue the case against underestimating this invisible enemy and get ridiculed for doing so...lol

Today Scott Morrison our PM, is finally starting to see what is in store for Australia over the next 6 months and is slowly moving towards a rational position.. The national disaster we are facing will be much less because of it, and even though I am no great fan, he has earned my respect, given the extremely hard decisions that he and the government have had to make. The science is there and he is making use of it. This can only be good! If only he (the Government) could apply this to AGW climate change we might actually get somewhere on that front as well.

I learned a long time ago that when ad hominem arguments are all that is left to use then the debate was won and discussion was ended. Not that it was ever really a discussion to begin with but more about defending failing self esteem and ego-centric fears than anything else. But of course like you, I am only joking and not to be taken seriously.. and dare I say my geriatric psychiatric nurse agrees with me...

    Sad Joke:
"I took social distancing so seriously that I had to kick my imaginary girl friend out of my bed..and get her to sleep in another room"

Not heard that as side effect but not dismissing it. Never used on long term basis

As a bit of a side line I'm watching a LOT of American news here and curious about the American health insurance system which I understand is loathe to pay out

I did hear already "this virus is not covered under your policy "

Will this situation lead finally lead to a health system and not a insurance system?

Feel free to split thread if think needed

Thanks, but it's not hurting yet. When the rest of it crumbles, it'll be beyond cloves. I'm just sticking to soft foods for the nonce - contemplating polenta for lunch today.
Might so, once they toss out the present nest of vipers.

I wasn't referring to CFR, or official policy or reporting. I was attempting a rational estimate of what the disease actually does, based on varied and confused statistics I've seen so far, allowing for the mild and undiagnosed cases that will never be treated or even tested. I wasn't setting government policy, i was responding to a poster who has as little influence with governments as i do.

More worryingly, I read an article pointing out that a lot of Americans have a health insurance plan as part of their employment package....and many of them are now losing their jobs at the moment.......

That news item I linked is worth reading. The people in the front lines are already stepping over the line from worry to anger.

I appreciate the effort, and you may yet be proved to be reasonably in range, but I wonder how you manged to arrive at the speculative figures you posted..

    Australia:
It is now 7 days since we were officially regulated to stay home and social distance. We had been earlier but not by Government regulation. ( in the chaos of the times I made a specific note in my diary -23-03-2020)
According to models at least 90% of the population has to be consistently social distancing, staying at home etc... for the transmission of this bug to be reign in. ( flatten the curve)

So far we have seen a slowing of the increase in growth, meaning that the curve is not getting steeper and if anything is starting to moderate slightly, suggesting that the restriction of movement, border controls, and social isolation is having an impact on this problem. It has come at a huge cost though.
According to an incubation period being considered as around 14 days we have 7 more days to go before seeing the peak in new confirmed cases.
Even so, the Government has repeatedly referred to a period of about 6 months to not only reign this in but to maintain any improvement to manageable levels.

From various sources. It's almost as hard to keep track of the sources of information as it is to avoid hearing them. Like, all-the-bloody-time!! I may have linked a pretty good numbers-tracker on one of these threads.
Here is a lovely trajectory tracker.
This "In China, the overall CFR was higher in the early stages of the outbreak (17.3% for cases with symptom onset from 1-10 January) and has reduced over time to 0.7% for patients with symptom onset after 1 February." WHO report was an early estimate.
You see the difficulty of generalizing, given the vast difference is local conditions.

Well I would not worry, new Information is coming in by the minute and as such positions may change.

I am forming the opinion that the current level of fear is un unwarranted irrespective of the death rate.

It is a problem clearly but our reaction is going to causes greater problems..the death rate from suicides I bet will outstripped virus deaths considering billions will lose their jobs, their savings their homes their car etc. One only has to look at the suicide rate with farmers in this country as they watched their life's work crumble.

I have said it over and over but no one comments...masks..it won't save you but will greatly reduce if not eliminate a carrier passing it on...social distancing sure but look at the damage by halting normality. Wearing a mask is not normal but one would hope things could go on more or less as normal.... really why not make masks compulsory and just get back to work and deal with that scenario.. letting the world economy collapse is just wrong...unless you have a vested interest in such a result.

And there are folk making money hand over fist on the stock exchange..the oil industry seems about to collapse..which makes me wonder why confinement has been chosen over wearing masks..I mean the die hard climate change alarmist must be rubbing their hands together with glee...we may need to go to electric cars but the transition needs to be gradual without causing bankruptcy, loss of jobs overnight etc.

Masks and deal with whatever that approach dictates...

That should keep us arguing all day, which is good seeing we are all indoors.
I put off going shopping the other day but simply must go tomorrow or I will starve..being an hour out of town cuts off any opportunity of shopping on line.
It will be interesting if after shopping I still face the prospect of starvation.

Fortunately not a hint of the virus in this region but I plan wearing a mask which although apparently is of no help may make the folk in this country town more appreciative of the problem, a reminder of the value of social distancing.

Perhaps what is happening in Italy, Spain and the USA has spooked the Government do you think?
What do you think is happening to suicide rates in those countries that were a little late in taking action?
You don't need to answer as surely no one really knows at the moment.

It seems that the main priority is to prevent our health systems from being over loaded by the expected massive numbers that will require hospitalization and ICU units. Buying time seems to be what it is really about. Time to allow the world to develop a vaccine without huge numbers of fatalities and economic destruction.

We can only hope that the preparations are not necessary and the scientists have got it wrong.

The COVID-19 is never going to go away entirely and a vaccine will almost certainly be needed to prevent further outbreaks in the years to come.

I am sure you would not wish to have to do all this again...

The community can not be locked down for ever after all. Apparently our Government is anticipating 6 month max. I do not see people staying so isolated for that long but time will tell.

Certainly there is a limit to how much support a government can provide for an extended time frame. The clock is ticking and we really have no idea what happens when we run out of time.

    Masks:
It is perplexing that the government is not encouraging the use of masks. Sure, they are attempting to prevent the general pubic from taking up valuable medical supplies that are needed in hospitals but wouldn't it be better to provide a low cost alternative that does the job of containing expectorant to some extent..when in face to face situations etc?

Right now key personnel at essential supermarkets are NOT wearing masks or any protective gear and it only takes one person to test positive and the entire supermarket is locked down and the incredible task of tracking contacts becomes a nightmare no one wants. If a super market is forced to lock down, the general pubic will no doubt get very concerned and panic buying at other supermarkets will be the outcome.

So I am seeing mixed messages that many people find confusing. Do we take this seriously or not? Type confusion.

The rate of increase in the confirmed cases is about 200,000 every 24 hours or so now. That is expected to rise to 300,000 per day very soon. We should probably hit the CC of 1 million with in a day or two. It is impossible to expect the stats to be up to date at any given time.
The WHO SR reports I was using are no longer useful.
    example:
WHO SR Today Global CC = 634,835
    JHU 713,171
    Worldometer 721,412
It is becoming a nightmare to keep up...

Not at all...any action from any Polly is driven by the prospect of votes...or is that too cynical.

I think the thing to learn is to crisis proof the economy.
Maybe the market economy needs adjustment, maybe a crisis insurance scheme...clearly things don't always just roll along..build that assumption into everything...a refined dooms day prepping at an entirely new level.
Of course they won't. We need to adjust attitudes so a face mask is simply the new fashion accessory...mmm maybe the burka had that origin

I want an astronaut helmet with my own air...makes sense with the Bush fire smoke near killing you.
I bet when some pollies brother in law has a warehouse full they will be compulsory.
Well yes, that is the downside of democracy and free speech..just watch NK breeze thru this with no recorded deaths.
