The heater isn't really the issue. "When the mercury dips to 20° F and the heating system is used to warm the inside of the vehicle, the average driving range for EVs is decreased by 41 percent." https://www.consumerreports.org/hyb...-car-for-a-cold-climate-double-down-on-range/And 20F is laughable comparared to the scenario I presented.
And your scenario is pretty laughable. Coldest it has ever been during the day in Minneapolis (one of the coldest cities in the continental US) was -20F. What, you say? You live in Yakutsk, Russia? Then you might see those daytime temps. And everyone who drives in those temperatures plugs their car in for their block/battery heater.
I hope my next car is an electric and driverless... charged by my solar array. Unfortunately not possible for my ten hour bi monthly trips but when that is over...electric car for me...the air con I thought would be a worry but air (only need cooling) is only about 800 watts. I am not particularly worried about saving the planet but not buying petrol has high appeal...and as when in the bush I generate my own power.. it could work well...but rainy spells...stay at home...which you tend to do so you don't mush up the driveway. Alex
I know your pain... we have miles of dirt between us and blacktop, mostly trail, untended unless we do it ourselves, and in the mountains to boot. even the goats think we're nuts... LOL Alaska? it may not be the lower 48, but it bears consideration, IMHO
Stop at a couple of Walmarts along the way. They got Macdonald's and excellent bathrooms. Get a dogsled. Most people use snowmobiles.
not around here, they don't. and McDonalds sucks, IMHO, unless you're at one in Canada where you can get poutine and the old Tim Hortons Coffee LOL LMFAO
Well, I am in Canada, and of-bloody-course macdonald's sucks, but it's warmer inside than outside, they have wifi, the early shift is often friendly seniors, and there's usually newspaper remnants lying around with the crosswords not filled in. They don't serve poutine, and if they did, it would be very small and damp. Tim Horton's coffee is just Folgers with a superiority complex.
dafuq? that's just sad... you should complain to the government about that one. still better than starbucks, IMHO. and priced a hell of a lot better too. I don't work for Wooster, so I don't make enough money for the pricier stuff...
I have to keep Jerry cans of diesel in my van for diggers and dumpers. Never had to use the diesel, plus, it's red diesel.
I live in Saskatchewan and yes we do see those daytime temperatures often enough that they need to be taken into account. No. They do not. That's why they have to run them during their breaks. I gave an actual scenario, not a hypothetical.
No you are correct. The improvements are taking place fast and I admit that I am not keeping up...unfortunately I have just purchased a new car so I will be wearing it out first. Alex
Its not a trend, Its more eficient way of driving.cheaper, cleaner more reliable too. Im just waiting for Tesla truck
