i am pro activating discoarse in science
    all about encouraging involvement
thread killer like comments that may be construed as emotively concocted are troll like.

maybe daves comments have no ulterior motive.
i place accountability on the more evolved to help pave a road that allows greater learning.
that is a core ideological morality around power & authority.

when a scientist goes against that it is usually because they are religiously indoctrinated to spread false science.

i expected something a little more attuned from dave. thats all.
i blocked him because of his manner for some time, but decided to unblock him as i find value in his opinion.
he has be blocked i believe.

i will use his knowledge as he wishes to be used
i am keenly and starkly aware that arrogance and authority are a death sentence to civility... as with current swings to the alt-right in global leadership issues.
science will be hit hard the father the move to the right.
its just a waiting game for the science budgets to be cut.
that in turn undermines education of children, which helps create more extremist radicals.

    butterfly effect ...
we all have the capability of the possibility of being a butterfly

i dont dislike dave, even if he is rude to me, ive met plenty of grumpy emotionally dysfunctional highly trained engineer type people over the years.

p.s i am also aware trolls will be reading this and some worse than trolls(possibly who knows for sure, better safe than sorry) as is the way of things so my comments are measured slightly.

wegs is a layperson from my understanding
with heavy emotive tone to intimate meaning, (compared to stereo typical dry-toast old world sciency male drudgery language forced sterility).
i would expect a sharp mind to acclimatize to that in turn.
preferably not for nefarious purposes(as is the common expected negative outcome option).

best speculative scenarios tell us that the BB was a fluctuation in the quantum foam, among many such fluctuations, some recollapsed, some burst, one just happened to evolve along with the laws of physics that evolved to the extent I mentioned previously....BB, hot dense state cooling, phase transitions, excess energy creating first fundamentals, first atomic nuclei after 3 minutes, first light elements at 380,000 years, first stars at 400 million years, S/nova, heavy elements, more stars, planets, abiogenesis, and the evolution of life to eventually humans, all fine tuned to the universe that evolved at the BB.
There is no certainty that starting all over again, that things would be the same.

I don't know you well enough to reason why Dave blocked you, but my experience and observations show me that Dave is one of the more respected members of the forum, who avoids getting into slanging matches, and like me apparently hates bullies. We though have different ways of handling them.
There are one or two obvious pigs and bullies on this forum, I don't believe Dave is one of them.
With the DM question, I believe Dave is saying rightly so, that the universe and all within it, has no distinct, instilled or preordained purpose....It is what it is.

i could trawl through some posts from about a year back, though i wont.
    we all have bad days.
sometimes peoples tone seems to be the content of their emotional intent.
Dave has an installed perception or me which he has paraded out on a couple of occasions(around a year back when i originaly blocked him, then again when i unblocked him and replied to one of his posts, where i then went and re-blocked him for his comment which was a personal slight).
installed by whom or what i am not sure.

Subjective metaphor of associated laws of physics ?
"purpose" in a religious sense i agree completely, they have none.

instead of giving his opinion he asks wegs to answer the question she is asking others after she says she is not sure about it.
    style ?

    ...
is dark matter the reason for gravity ?
    ...
emotive interpretation of the "nature" of the question...

sometimes i set the bar too high

    Oh g'wan - you're just nursing a sore ego.

This is why I can't read your posts:
This is simply a half-formed thought fragment. You leave it to the reader to divine the meaning and intent of that word salad.
There may be meaning in there, but you're too lazy to write it out in sentences, so I'm too lazy to decipher it.
98% of your posts follow this format. Why not show your readers respect?

    As to the subject:
This is the Astro/Cosmo forum, a hard science forum, not philosophy or Free Thoughts.

If the question is what is DM? then it's a valid question. If the question is what is DM's "purpose"?, then that is not appropriate for the Astro/Cosmo forum.

If dark matter didn’t exist, would life be able to exist....that’s the question.

Where the topic goes, is hard to say. Ex chemist took the time to read the article I posted on it and offered a great answer. That’s where I was coming from. This sub forum, I thought, is to ask questions and to help those better understand the topic. I’m not an expert in this so I posed the question, here.

But most everyone’s replies have been helpful. “Purpose” isn’t the right word, though.

OK, mea culpa I guess. I did not see an article so I haven't read what prompted the question.

SciFo is terribly user-hostile when it comes to embedded links - they're practically invisible. I went back through the tread and still can't find it.

Can you mention what post # the link to the article is in?

Sorry if my response to this was brusque. "Purpose" is a trigger word in sciencey circles. It's often used by anti-science types - and we get used to stomping on it as quickly as possible.

    You were saying?

Pleasure is the purpose for life. Nothingness is an illusion. Instead say "only say yes."

Don't get me wrong. We decide our own purpose in life; I agree with you there.
But the question was about the purpose of natural things.

What's the purpose of an ant?
What's the purpose of a lemon?
    What's the purpose of rock?
What's the purpose of the element selenium?

    To worship God.
To make a pie for those who worship God.
To provide a resting place for those who worship God.
To make light meters for those who worship God and to provide a reward for those who didn't chose Arsenic on their way to choosing Selenium.

The Anthropic principal and fine tuning are sometimes excuses by some, to install an IDer. I strongly disagree, simply because if the universe were any way other than what we observe, we simply wouldn’t be here to worry about it. Of course the universe seems fine-tuned from our perspective....it’s the only one we know.
But factually, the truth is the reverse of that: It's the life within the universe, that has evolved through chemistry from non matter in a process we call Abiogenesis, and evolved, has done so in a manner that is fine tuned to the universe we know and all .

By ''purpose,'' I meant function, or what does dark matter do? Without it, would life exist? Is it necessary for life to exist?

Not ''purpose'' as in...a pre-destined/determined purpose.
