    Nothing?
    Pure energy?
    God?
    Space?
    Another universe?

It's a guess no matter what.

My spiritual beliefs aside, I feel most comfortable with ''I don't know.'' It gets tricky for some, when they try to add ''meta'' to ''physics.'' All kinds of trippy, abstract ideas can come from that type of speculation.

But...if ''something'' existed before the Big Bang, would it be a safe guess that the Big Bang didn't mark the absolute beginning?

Before there was a Universe there was as Big Bang Singularity that was a Super Massive Black Hole.

Please provide evidence for this claim.

    We don't know.

Essentially all we know is that there was a very dense state of the universe. There is also a singularity. This proves that the theory which has this singularity is not reliable near the singularity. So existing established theory does not tell us anything about this question.

The observational evidence for inflation tells us that before inflation started the speed of expansion was much lower than after inflation. No observation excludes that before inflation where was even a shrinking so that the Big Bang is, in reality, a Big Bounce.

    Speculation.

I indeed suspect that it might be, but it's formulated as a fact, not speculation, hence my request for evidence backing it up.

I agree: formulating things as fact when they (clearly) are not, is kinda funny.

What came before the Big-bang? Brooklyn-nine-nine!

I would guess there was nothing before the Big-Bang. But for how long...?

Nothingness doesn't have time. It has nothing.

before being was nothingness, before nothingness was the void, before the void was the Tao

Nothing cannot be classified, quantified or even stated. It simply doesn't exist. Never has, never will.

I find it hard to imagine how nothing could produce something.

What is that supposed to look like? Energy isn't stuff. Energy is a number.

We can't rule it out, but there's no evidence for it, either.

Not the kind of space we're familiar with.

Perhaps. Or maybe a multiverse of bubble universes.

Point is: it's all speculation right now. And that's even assuming that the idea of "before the big bang" makes logical sense, which it might not. It might be the wrong question to ask - like asking "What's north of the north pole?"

That idea doesn't work, since black holes, supermassive or otherwise, don't explode.
