As us humans listen out for alien signals from different worlds, what happens if the ones we find are subject to alien laws, say, subject to their copyright laws? And in those laws, interception without licence means the death penalty and they apply those laws to the universe. Have such agencies as NASA factored in such problems?
subjective moral absolutes have been mentioned by globally renowned physicists several times about the implications of becoming known or interacting with another species. statistically it does not bode well with human behaviour history. simplistic example a militaristic culture may have been able to out pace other cultures in technology development for invasion and domination via space travel. such a culture would hold no value on the human species except for any slave like direct profitable return could be provided. they would almost certainly cull at least 50% of the worlds human population as a 1st basic step. the vast majority of human functional process of majority tasks can be replaced with AI administration computers & robotic machines. i should imagine the human species would be reduced to around 1 billion to maintain genetic diversity with selective culling assuming they had some potential use for humans. they may prefer earth to have no humans & no citys.
This is a needlessly complex scenario, and missing the forest for the trees. Simply: what if an alien species decides we have transgressed in any way they don't like, and decide to punish us. Period. The details of why, exactly, they might be offended are too varied and nebulous to worry about at this stage. The issue is that they have decided we are enemies.
Copyright laws don't prohibit interception of copyrighted works. You can't be sued for copyright infringement whenever you hear a song playing on the radio, or whenever you read a book. You can only be sued if you copy the work illegally. So, it won't be a problem.
Their laws would only apply to their own species. Our laws don't apply to cows. If cows do something we don't like, we feel free to eat them.
this post should be in the trash with the rest of cesspool posts... Cry the depth these once proud forums has sunken to. that OP hasnt even been removed yet, just shows how much this place has changed.
But the pedantry remains: Your post, #10, is a post; this collection of posts is a "thread" or a "topic".
Maybe Engell79 was bring self-referential. He's saying this post (#10) should be trashed. Possibly because it does nothing to further the topic of the thread, and is really just the kind of trolling he disparages. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! Kind of witty, don't you think?
Are space agencies just listening or recording? Some years ago, you could sign up online with an agency, I think NASA (jokes to one side that it's a scam bla bla) where they could use your computer to process some of their data (noise from space looking for signals). So in a way, increasing it's computing power to speed up this process. I don't know if that's still ongoing. You might have an angry alien after you!
I think you are referring to SETI. At one time government funded I believe. Currently, public funded. I think you can still process signal data for them on your home P C. I have never done it though. I am doubtful of results and even if there were, your P.C. horsepower and electric bill facilitated a discovery but you will likely be last to know. Not my kind of deal.
I idea behind SETI's crowd-sourced processing was always one of altruism and group effort, never of personal glory.
True. Just not my kind of arrangement I would participate in. Kind of all 1 way in their favor. No mutual benefit type that I typically seek out when generosity creeps out of me. YmmvPlease Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
Same same if they decide what we have been broadcasting out into the Cosmos offends their sensibilities? Don't tell politicians about this. Next thing they will demand trips to space to negotiate (junket space trips) Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
I did it for many years but just forgot to reinstall it on a new system, and that was that. Has it changed much?
