What can a scientist in my Star Wars fan fic be working on?

I’m trying to write a Star Wars story about a scientist who is working on something in the era of the New Republic. He does not believe in the Force. I just need something for him to be researching. It really isn’t that important to the story; it just has to sound cool and scientific. It can NOT be game-changing or something that can alter the story in a dramatic way. Also it can’t already have been done in Legends or Canon. I want a fresh idea.

    It cannot be

    - A time machine

    -A teleporter

    -A matter replicator

    -Synthetic tibanna gas

    -A singularity Weapon

    - Any type of droid

    -Anything to do with holograms

    -A food synthesizer

    - Anything to do with the Force or Midi-chlorians

    - A shrink ray

    -A freeze ray

    -pico and femtotechnology

-A Dyson sphere or any type of megastructure.

-Liquid metal armor or a nano morph

    -Any improvements on the hyperdrive

    -Limb regeneration

    -Hyperspace nullifier

    -Holodeck

    - Knowledge Transfer (Instant learning like in the Matrix)

    -Philosophers Stone

    -Kinetic weapons

    -Solar sail

-Anything to do with kyber crystals

    -Gene editing

    -Mech suit

    -Exosuit

    -Gender change

In canon, during the Empire, scientists were researching methods to control droids, lasers that can punch through deflector shields and ship scale disintigrators. These ideas are therefore taken.

even if its new and its a new idea and you thought of it and i didnt but its new and its not cool post it anyway so i can have it.
because it needs to be interesting...

you want others to help you but you do not want to be appreciative or thank them for their creativity ?

How about a remote mind reader? Detects small changes in electric fields and rebuilds individual thoughts based on typical readings of a given species? We can almost do that now.

Or the anthropology of a little known extinct species?

    ?
no comment about obvious consciousness transfer devices into robots or synthetic minds...
oddly apparent by it being missing

cleaning your content to sell to a christian audience to make it all nice and squeaky clean for their kids to watch ?

that would be quite dishonest artistically and scientifically.

Artistically, the force thing has been done. (So has Star Wars, but that's the premise). Scientifically, it's all made up. And I think the midichlorian thing undermines the notion of the force as a thing you can cultivate.

Well, just because he doesn't believe on The Force doesn't mean he couldn't be studying midichlorians on their own merits. Who knows what curiosities a scientist might find lurking in them?

Or maybe simply inventing a better light sabre, or a landspeeder that can float ten feet in the air? Or Wookie hygiene?

Max: shouldn't whatever the scientist in your story is working be part of the plot? I mean, not just some irrelevant MacGuffin widget. If it doesn't advance the plot, it should be cut out. Good, tight writing often means ensuring every component you add serves multiple roles in carrying the story.

eg. a scene where the scientist gets to show the protagonist around his laboratory is an excellent opportunity to ... show the bond between them ... go into one or both of their backstories ... show off the protag's brains/ social skills ... expound upon otherwise boring Republic politics ... foreshadow later plot twists, ... etc.

Make every scene - every element - count. Kill multiple birds with one chapter, as it were.

So, what widget - whether it is realized or a failure - would advance some other part of your plot or exposition?

    World building.

Just do what other writers do, find something cutting edge and extrapolate:

I like the 2D materials. Maybe a 2D ribbon that can slice a planet in half?

Sure. But that just means the utility and relevance extends over multiple stories. It should still assist the story, whether long or short.

i think the creativity of the human versions of star wars is 1st rate.
the comic strip animated stuff is not my bag.

it falls into the junk TV category to me.
like watching endless commercials non stop with emotional over tones thrown in to try and influence the viewer as a reactionary alarm.. like most modern kid-teen cartoons
TV guy and all those endless Cartoon programs.
    thats not art
thats filling a slot of time to sell adds.

looking to fuel the crap cartoons off true creative muse is like throwing paint over a master art piece and then taking pictures of your _ick in front of it.
emotional _ick pics for advertising slots ...

    animated films.. completely different story

search the word please on this thread

    no courtesy
    no pleases
    no thank you in advance
no terse rhetorical sense of anguish or embarrassment...
nothing(so it gets nothing in abundance from me)

But it doesn't have to be practical in that it's relevant to the plot, just interesting.

I don’t know what a 2D ribbon is but I was down to 3 ideas. A Guided recirprocating deflector shield from someone on abovetopsecret forums, Synthetic coaxium from FFG forums and The Dynamics of an Asteroid Field on Sjgames. I decided against the shield because it was too wordy and could be a game changer. The coaxium I felt ruined the rarity of hyperfuel and the asteroid belt analyzation was good but their are likely billions of asteroid fields in the galaxy. Who the hell cares about plotting one.

Okay so my archeology idea didn’t work. My scientist is called upon by the New Republic to investigate why the supermassive black hole is more active than usual and sucking in things from a further range. I just need something for the scientist to be studying before he is called away. It has to sound fresh and cool.

so... not a scientist then ?

a sciency thing for a non scientist to be studying that sounds kinda sciency but is not actual science because actual science is way too boring ...

you want a creative catchy thing that makes money by its attractive creative engaging idea and content, but it cant be to complex... and not boring...

has it occurred to you that as you move in that direction you risk moving the context and nature of the entire subjectivity away from actual science to be just a trending hot topic ?

i think you may be directing to a specific age range which you probably should lead with.

what age is your audience ?(should readers assume you are default targeting male pre-teens ?)

while i understand what your inferring. the "of-coarse" bit is a little diversionary when it comes to larger groups as parents & cultures tend to directly force gender conformity into children.
while many want to try and exploit their cult-ish ideologies into gender identity wars, pubescent & pre pubescent children tend to follow the examples of the adults in their lifes.
be that toward or away from the examples being displayed.

it is a impolite question to ask parents if they think it is ok for pediatric psychologists to design content to capture the minds of children on TV.
meanwhile the big psychopathic machine called business doesn't care.
this "ideological war" on children is something i tend to steer well clear of.

    i am quite a purist
    science for science
pop culture trend content for pop-culture
    religion for religion
    politics for adults only etc...

The irony in your position is that the more you bend to give the child what they want, the less creative and the less imaginative you become and the smaller your audience variety becomes.
then you are left with the bi-polar reality of many kids TV content which is either completely meaningless flash card cartoon emotive catch phrases
or symbology designed to capture emotive collectivism.

given that you're in a sci-fi realm, this is where i think purism is at its best as it then lends to attract and inspire those who are interested in science.
this strengthens your audience rather than watering it down.

the current mainstream fascination with bi-polar ideological confrontation(bi-partisan ideology) is not good for the education and culturing of creative minds.

wound you rather inspire the next Einstein who will out grow you as audience, or create a couch potato that is a life time subscriber ?
    lol
    somewhere in-between is a compromise

note, you dont have to look far in this site to see there are many who would freely exploit such information and ideas to force their cult-ish beliefs onto children to sell them political ideology as the only possible reality.
i have always felt sci-fi is a refuge to such decisive brain washing.
