If there was a great flood and extinction event, the likely culprit is Theia.

I doubt if there was any boat of any significance.
This flood was a result of a massive ice melt.
Think today if we had a 30 ft sea level rise over night...it would kill many destroy our world as we know it and send us back to the stone age...there is a school of thought that is what happened and at that time a relatively advanced world wide civilisation was in effect wiped out...the Sumarians talk of gods and some think those gods were some of the advanced folk left after the big wipe out...it would be like a hill billy like me having some smart folk from LA move to my mountain and do things that impressed me...not that I would call them gods but I hope you can see the possibility.

You tangle my brain into knots! Waffler, me better? I doubt it!

You are correct on the Sumerian issue based on an English translation of their clay tablets.

Maybe I'll try to sort out the effect of the flood would have over time. But not now. Maybe soonish.

I get none of that hill billy mountain business

Probably. At some point there was probably a local flood, and some farmer took his daughter and their donkey on their boat to avoid the flood - and ended up out at sea a little longer than they expected.

4000 years later it turned into a great story.

You have no idea about the concept of religion, and the philosophical ramifications. You are not debating, you should be banned. Do you think you know anything?

Of course! Only you yourself are any kind of authority on religion. It must be taxing to have to deal with so many people who know nothing, compared to your brilliance. If only the world had more people like you.
Looks like all the science is getting to you. Perhaps you'd be happier on a less fact-oriented board?

You are indeed a smooth talker.

I will find a video for you...but what I talk about is not mainstream ...still I am inclinded to think there may be something in it...
I am a shy hermit whos natural habitat is the bush..200 acres with no neighbours well above any future flooding...

My point is a 30 ft sea level rise would see most people wiped out leaving small pockets of folk like me to start the world again...well I would not bother you see.

However it does seem we may have a history that is hidden from us ... reason why its hidden is because it does not fit the major religions view...and like it or not they have enormous influence on what history we take on board.

Ask why are the Sumerians not taugh in school when they contributed so much to our modern world...most things even our calander apparently and yet no mention...its like why does Nikola Telsa not get mentioned in school...he only invented the electric motor, alternating current and the radio ...there is a long list...the greatest genius the world has seen...but no mention.

The answer to these questions comes down to the influence of religion.

    In my view.

The Babble says they floated around for a hundred and fifty days.

    No, the bible says; 40 + 150 days = 190 days total.

Billion, not million. 4.2 million only takes us back to the end of the Miocene.

But attacking Hovind is like shooting fish in a barrel, isn't it? I mean, how many people take that tax-evading jailbird seriously?

Well, on the subject of knowing things, i.e. information, it might be relevant to refer readers to this thread on the possible origins of the biblical flood myth:
    http://www.sciforums.com/threads/floods.159959/

We covered a lot of ground, and many different points of view and hypotheses were aired. Suffice it to say that there seem to be several contenders for real-life events that led to the flood story in the Epic of Gilgamesh, which is clearly the one that also appears in the bible.

The Ark didn't float until the rains had dropped enough water to accumulate to the point where sea level was high enough to reach it, not on the first day of the rains, so we have an impossible to calculate number that is something less than 190.

    How?

I listened to a couple minutes of the video and I turned it off. It's shit. "Deny God, deny God." Did Jan PM dave to post this video? What about agnostics not denying God? What about scientists accepting their own ignorance and knowing nothing is absolute besides mathematics?

Oh, what did he say about morality? Was there an implication that you can't be a moral person without a belief in God or some shit?

    Fuck off! (not you)

I do agree "deny God" is an incredibly irritating phrase, especially when applied to someone simply expressing rational doubt or scepticism.

Conjures up visions of eyeball-rolling peasants crossing themselves and exclaiming "He hath blasphemed!!!!" etc. All very Monty Python.

True, but once the animals were on board hey needed to be fed and cared for.

Whether the boat is afloat or not is irrelevant. Question is if it was possible to have a scenario as described in the bible.

IMO, there is no possible way that one or two of each species could be maintained for several months.
As a youth, I worked in the Amsterdam zoo, which has a fair amount of species and the amount of food each week was brought in by trainloads. When all is covered by water, how does one gather a constant supply of food?
    Water? Waste?

LOL, no one ever does. It seems to me it would be a serious consideration for an extended sea voyage...

We would not want the lions to get too hungry, else there would not be one or two of each kind very quickly.
Elephants have been known to eat more than a bag of potato chips.
    Do the math!
