Hello. The rise of the internet may cause the decline of high-street shops. However, will this make postal-services more popular??
On-line shopping is the modern version of mail-order, which is fine. But the national postal system was intended for interpersonal communication, not commerce. It's far cheaper to send parcels by mail than by commercial carrier, because the postal service is partially funded by tax revenue. This opens questions about free competition [between courier services and the post office] and government subsidies for business. Of course, if all business did have equal access to cheap postal rates (they don't) the government involvement would actually enable free competition.
there is a question about access cost compared to cmpany size and market share. if a private busines built the equivilent to the national postal system, would it be forced by a USA court to hand over some of its cheap delivery network ? keeping in mind, creating jobs which in turn creates towns and citys and life styles & technology etc etc ... is an action of government. regardles of the named system be it capitalist or communist(in reality miced market socialist based freemarketeering) all systems have a government accountability to provide jobs for the people who elect them and pay their wages. though with the elitist superioriy and system of financial dictatorship it seems to easily fall by the wayside from being a openly accepted financial need and accountability. while on one side you have complaints about lack of efficiency, you also have a much higher income and life style being generated for the employees of the state owned company. on the flip side you have th eprivate model which seeks to drive down life style and income of the employees to hand that money to a much smaller group... or in many cases a profit share for stock holders which waters down the value of the profit many times while helping to create industry of stock brokers and secondary money handlers etc.
