Text‐belief consistency effect - Readers' memory for belief‐consistent texts is often stronger than for belief‐inconsistent texts.

I agree, but true empathy runs much deeper than simple preference. Empathy is the result of chemical reactions in the mirror neural network of the brain, which allows a person to "experience" the very same physical reaction as observed in another's experiential event.

I have seen a lot of people in my wordly travels, but I must admit, I have never actually met a"navel gazer".
I'm sure I would have noticed.

    Omphaloscepticism?

Just wondering whether the navel might have been confused with the "third eye" down the years.....

Contemplating that physical area could perhaps have been a meditative technique?

Interesting but I think (just from memory and last coffee a while back) the Pinal gland in the brain was thought to be the third eye

That can only be a modern idea, surely. Meditative techniques go back thousands of years when the pineal gland can't have been known to exist.

But yes I did hear that the pineal gland was conjectured to be connected to this "third eye" idea.

I heard that some practitioners actually covered up this "third eye" externally with some material to put it into some kind of temporary dormancy,presumably...

Bariolage: what most people would refer to as "camouflage paint". (Derived from barioler: motley/ to streak with several colors, but also used in music: the alternation of notes on adjacent strings, one of which is usually open).
The French army distinguishes between bariolage (the paint scheme on a vehicle) and camouflage (netting, foliage additions etc).

Actually it is a teaching ritual in Tibet, practised by Lama monks.

During winter time a monk sits outside draped in a wet towel and visualizes a burning coal in the navel. After awhile the body temperature rises and the body heat dries the wet towel before it freezes and monk does not feel the cold air.

This was told by Alexandra David-Neel a Belgian born writer, who spent years in Tibet and first western woman to become intimately familiar with the Dalai Lama, and wrote a wonderful book about her stay in Tibet. "Magic And Mystery In Tibet 1932"

Tried to find out a date of the origin of the third eye and from that a link to Pinal gland but not much success
But I agree third eye meditation probably was around long before Pinal gland was known and linked up only AFTER the gland was discovered
