The problem you point out has nothing to do with science it has to do with the fact we are in a market economy.

Science does what it does very well.

Science builds models of things we can rely upon and makes testable predictions that must be found perfect or the model fails.

Religion makes no testable predictions and certainly seems to avoid facts.

Look at how Galileo was treated for offering up facts ... the church only foregave him a little while ago.

Why because he presented facts which showed the good book to be wrong.

    GPS delivered by science.

TV smart phones computers medicine our cars our planes all thanks to science.

I bet you could get by for a year or two without religion but you wont enjoy one single day if you reject all science has provided.

Science has not set out to confront religion it is just that science uses facts and it is these facts that religion finds confronting because those facts show how wrong thesists can be when they rely on knowledge from the bronze age.

I will be interested if you accept evolution as proven science.

I hope to receive answers to assess if our friend is as intelligent as I believe him to be...evasion of my questions will tell us just as much.

    Hope you are well.

The linked study indicates a decline in people identifying with a specific religion, and a decline in Christianity in particular. But it points to a diversifying of the religious and spiritual landscape. Smaller and minority religions are growing, and more people are categorized under the rather broad "spiritual, but not religious" identifier.

Rejecting science has even worse consequences - not only failing to empower, but actively undermining, political solutions.

Given your whole premise is geared for political failure, empowered or otherwise, the entire case is moot.

Intelligent or dumb - could be the evasion is because he's smart - but the smartness lies within the evasion (need the intelligence to drive the evasion)

Not sure if the dumbness is more denial or a production of to much invested to pull out

Would rather crash and burn when going for the crash through

Personally I think the path chosen is dumb. Apart from not playing chess with pigeons I don't play Ping Pong with pigeons either

Very well thanks. Off to 2nd holiday Bali November at ono in March and due to the stars aligning just right a week in China few weeks back

Hope you well and getting good star alignment also

No, the bias against atheists comes from theists who feel threatened by them.

No atheist I know of is "focused on replacing things" because there's nothing to replace.

You are not a skydiver (for example.) Why not? Why are you so focused on replacing skydiving, especially since you are so determined to not put any forethought into what you will replace it with?

    True

    Atheists thought bubble

OK I no longer need to not believe in god because no-one is telling me I do need to believe in god

Stuff people are telling me about now have evidence to back then up and fit in with my personal experience and observations

Boring - can I start a movement to bring back Sky Daddy?

Hey where did that rock come from?

Perhaps there might be a chance anyone might believe you if you weren't in the middle of such a thread as this ...

I am very well thank you.

It appears you are right no answers...so do we assume whatever we like?

    I think so.

Lets get in the theist party mood...I will make something up and then you make something up.

    Mmmmmmm

I cant think of anything I will never make the grade as a theist.

Hang on...the Earth orbits the Sun...pretty good eh...oh hang on its a fact and you cant play the game using facts you can only have made up stuff that is not supported by evidence.

It sounds like our friend may be anti science which probably means he rejects evolution and buys the flood story.

What do you call folk who appear intelligent but are religious and place established fact behind made up stuff from the bronze age and think because they are well educated in the history of the nonsense they have found an answer to questions science sorts out in detail.

Would anyone go to a doctor of the bronze age over a real doctor from the modern era...I guess these religious folk probably would...I keep saying myself.

    "They cant be that crazy"

but I realise that is wishful thinking as they are that crazy...probably crazier than I can imagine.

Anyways I have been back here because I have had time to waste and choose waste it here..but fully recovered up and active... I like to remind myself that they are out there and remind them they have built a delussion upon made up stuff from the bronze age☺...I have wasted time if I ever thought they could be rational but I never thought that ...more a case teasing them..its a little better than watching TV but only sometimes.. you get more truth from the used car sales adds than you get from these characters...and so I admit to teasing which is bad but it feels good ...and the little attacks they make they smugly think goes over your head...I like playing dumb with them and watch their response and their smugness...I dont fire back at smugness I like to watch it..its like handing a drowning man a brick...the ultimate victory is the one you enjoy in silence.. but I am getting back to the real world (today actually) and doing real stuff and so I wont be wasting time here...so enjoy your trip (s)

    Bye

The foundations for right social behavior existed long before the construction of mystical notions to describe them, just as nutritious food existed long before the creation of junk food. Eliminating junk food doesn’t deprive society of a vital means of sustenance, it steers it back to a healthier staple. Likewise, weaning society off the junkiness of religion allows it to fortify its inherent bond with the capacity of reason that has enabled it to attain its current evolutionary status.

    Sure, that's the atheist theory.
Practical application (or working with a flatline on the cultaral ascendency charts) is something else.

No, that's a sociological theory. What religious alternative would you propose to certify behavioral fitness?

Having something to contrast it against that isn't either nonexistant or a contender for being one of the greatest illustrations of modern fascism might be a start.

That’s not what I asked. What do you see as a religious basis for right social behavior?

I had thought the best contender for illustrating modern fascism was Daesh. Or is that just old-fashioned fascism, rather than the modern kind?
