And yet I hear pop(or genuine) psychologists claim that people are always putting themselves down.

I personally was diagnosed by one of those scientology questionnaires as having a deluded awareness of my own well being (think that was the description that applied)-so thought everything was rosier than it actually was.

Now that I think of it ,there was a book by CEM Joad called "How to think"(paraphrasing).Perhaps it contains an antidote to the DK effect.

Do you not understand the 1 or are you asking about the other problems which make it difficult to recognize & deal with reality?

They claim people are ALWAYS putting themselves down?

People are very often inconsistent & often seem unable to recognize that they are inconsistent. Sometimes, this is cognitive dissonance.

    Scientology questionnaires are not reliable.

Cognitive Dissonance - the mental discomfort (psychological stress) experienced by a person who simultaneously holds two or more contradictory beliefs, ideas, or values. This discomfort is triggered by a situation in which a belief of a person clashes with new evidence perceived by that person. When confronted with facts that contradict personal beliefs, ideals, and values, people will find a way to resolve the contradiction in order to reduce their discomfort.
In A Theory of Cognitive Dissonance (1957), Leon Festinger proposed that human beings strive for internal psychological consistency in order to mentally function in the real world. A person who experiences internal inconsistency tends to become psychologically uncomfortable, and so is motivated to reduce the cognitive dissonance, by making changes to justify the stressful behavior, either by adding new parts to the cognition causing the psychological dissonance, or by actively avoiding social situations and contradictory information likely to increase the magnitude of the cognitive dissonance.

I should have said "very commonly". (perhaps they said "always" ,I can't remember;it was just repeated to me anyway.)

And ,unscientifically I dismissed the questionnaire since (1)it was not what I wanted to hear (2) the dodgy source and (3) the lack of any practical consequences. that I could see might apply.

Social cognition - a sub-topic of social psychology that focuses on how people process, store, and apply information about other people and social situations. It focuses on the role that cognitive processes play in social interactions. In cognitive neuroscience the biological basis of social cognition is investigated. Developmental psychologists study the development of social cognition abilities.

"It may be partly caused by cognitive bias in that people recognize other people's flaws & mistakes but not their own." I meant to say other cognitive bias.

"Whatever degree higher ability people are immune to it, that is valid probably only or mainly concerning the things they are very good at." I probably should have said for some of them.

i was being deliberately vague to request further elaboration.
my assertion though un documented is that reality is subjective and so to assert that anothers reality is non real is more of a process of asserting a sense of prioratisation.
if this is so and it does not dwel directly on the basic needs then it is a subjective nature of culture.

though "not being real" or "ignoring reality" are loaded expresions that relate to a sense of ignorance or mental dysfunction.

the irony in making it a sense of a "word of the day" is a little funny as it translates to be a nature of forced narative to something that is purely subjectively asserted to be non critically aligned as a nature of current human needs.
(if it changes from day to day is it a need and thus is it realness in its reality)

pushing it further to another tangent of the perceptual applied paradigm
    e.g
"are you dealing with the reality that you are wrong" ?
no ? then you are yet again ignoring reality.

the sense of this assertion is a facist bully boy natured dictation of perception and a little invasive to say the least.
the rendered sense of the notion is insult to undermine current status.

thus what use is the term ?
it lacks a sense of direct need to atribute the "reality" to as a critical content.
thus it may well be a negative effect on the intended result.

I do not want to read that before asking when you say reality, do you mean the reality or various perceptions of reality?

i mean the persons dictation of what must be focussed on as being the most important point for that person. it is a dictation of perception ...
adding this to try and give you more understanding...
so thus in dictating the reality the person dictating makes something more important in that other persons world.
that process of dictating reality for that other person could be concieved as a changing of reality on a mental and philisophical basis. thus "reality" has changed.
so its a little of the schrodinger effect.

    I do not understand.
There is a huge difference between reality & perceptions of reality.
I will go back & read it.

It is a word with a definition thus appropriate for this thread regardless of its use or effects.

It seems you are mostly treating perception as reality. Perception is subjective. Reality is not.
There is no another's reality. Reality includes everything. There is another's perception.

We are all ignorant to varying degrees. Some are better than others but no human is adequately equipped to discern reality. The brain does what it can but it is handicapped.

I will have to get back to this. not feeling well.

I don't think so, but I'm not bored enough to search.

Personally, I think we should start calling it Eliza.
