Where is God?

It used to be thought that God resided on the mountain (Sinai, Olympus), but when men climbed the mountain, there were no gods to be found. So, men then thought God resides in the clouds, but men flew up to the clouds and again no gods were found. God lives among the stars, but men have been observing our star, sent probes out to our solar systems planets and used various types of telescopes to see beyond the stars to other galaxies. Now, it's said that God resides in another dimension.

I wonder if they'll get it right this time?

    So, where is God?

    There's a gap, and he's in it.

According to the Platonic traditions of theology, God would be the same place that mathematics and the laws of physics are.

According to some of the Indian traditions, God is wherever it is that your subjectivity originates, in that weird... emptiness... right behind your face. The unseen seer that is always subject and never object, hence can't be known in conventional ways.

According to Isaac Newton, the universe of space, time and matter that we see is God's 'sensorium', the field of God's experience, in practice his imagination since there's nothing besides God (one without a second) for God to perceive with sensory experience.

These three versions aren't necessarily contradictory. Plato's 'forms' (including mathematics and the abstract physical laws) have traditionally been identified by Christian and Islamic Platonism with God's ideas. Newton identified physical reality with God's imagination. And Indian idealism treats physical reality as a giant mental construct.

I don't suppose you have any references for these ideas about God? Scripture? People? Places?

God resides at the beginning of the universe. In time, not space.

An omnipotent god is claimed to be everywhere. It is on top of every mountain & at the bottom of the ocean. It is in the ground & in the air. It is in your beer & in your underwear.

Lets talk about God, lets comment on his likes and dislikes and now lets speculate upon where he is...
    No no no no....
Lets first establish that something folk call God actually exists outside the various wishful thinking claims that seek to proceed to detail prior to a reasonable establisment that there is indeed a God.

However if for one moment we entertain the possibilty of a God existing the reality is thanks to science God now only has two places where he could be involved for no other reason that we do not have scientific answers ... the point of creation...Did God start the big bang? And the link between life and a group of chemicals necessary for life.
Xan God step forward and show how he is relevant in either of these two areas.

In any event those are the last places a God may have relevance...but like all other things a scientific explanation probably is not far away and then unfortunately the real prospect of God disappearing due to irrelevance will be with us...maybe then these lets make up stuff about God chats will disappear.
However until then please outline some sort of case for the God you wish to talk about before we play lets pretend.
For the sake of avoiding delusion lets talk about attributes of something that has been reasonably established.
Establish the God you wish to talk about please.

Where is God? I think I saw him on the street corner on my way to the gym. It seems he is in need of money and is, in general, down on his luck.

This downsizing that has been taking place as the population has become more educated has hit everyone hard apparently.

That was him. Apparently he isn't omnipotent but he is omnipresent.

You are right River we dont even know that do we.

Clearly we need to establish the existence first and perhaps in that endeavour we may find if there is a God, if it is a Mr or Mrs or something else.

But you are right to say "he" is a huge unsupported jump in speculation.

Thank you River I take such as a compliment.

It is not easy to be simple and work with what I do know and to avoid converting speculation into established fact.

It must be easy to establish to the satisfaction of a simple man that there is some plausible basis to be able to conclude there is perhaps a God or indeed that there is no reasonable evidence to take us past "we dont know"...

Lets consider the balance that you seek.

On the one hand we have claims by theists which are without support for the proposition they propose and on the other hand we have atheists saying they have no reason to accept unsupported claims nor will they and take the simple position that before they accept a claim they require something by way of support, proof or evidence.

It would seem that the appropriate way to achieve a degree of balance would be for the theist to offer a little something that could elevate their claims past the product of brain washing and non critical thinking and an unrealistic desire to be on intimate terms with an entity that has yet to be shown to be more than a character made up by superstitious bronze age folk who did not know where the Sun went at night.

It would be wonderful to have some balance in these matters but the inability of theists to support their superstitious claims suggest they will neither put up or shut up.

    Hope you are well River.

Not only inability to support their claims but often unwillingness to try.
