Football players are being fined for taking a protest knee before the flag.

A new law was passed that hunting endangered species such as the bald eagle, America's symbol of freedom, is no longer prohibited and all endangered species are now "fair game".

    For shame!!!!!

I would like a citation on the second assertion, please. If true, that's very disturbing.

Oh, wait, can I hunt endangered species, too? How much does a stamp for __________ cost? (I didn't want to be a racist, homophobic, NAZI, redneck, gun-toter, general hater of anyone who's not a Southern Baptist, and so far right-wing that I was born in boots, all at once. My single attempt at PC that anyone is likely to see from me. Truth tastes a lot better.)

As to your first point, the team owners are levying fines on players who don't play by "the rules", not the government. That's a big difference.

The government is not defending the players's civil rights. That's hardly different - if the first were accurate.
    It isn't: https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/trump-hunting-bald-eagles/

(There was a permit issued recently for a couple of designated Red tribesmen to kill I think two eagles - the feather supply was running short, or something. I don't recall whether they were Bald or Golden. )

In response to Trump's condemnations and accusations of non-patriotism.

Re: Eagles and other protected species,
I just saw this as a news flash on tv and did not research it any further. I hope I was wrong.!

The thread title is "Patriotism?". What is your actual point?

The kneeling thing at football games has nothing to do with patriotism or lack of patriotism. Killing a Bald Eagle has nothing to do with patriotism either. If it's an endangered species then it's likely to be protected. If the numbers increase it may no longer be endangered or protected.

    Regarding the Bald Eagle...it's protected.

If true then there is a certain irony in that comparison, IMO.
I know , but Trump made it matter of patriotism.
That was the point (if the story is true).
The eagle is no longer an endangered species, but is protected because of it's symbolic value re freedom. That's where the patriotism comes in.

But I would not put it past Trump to revoke all protection on wildlife. I recall his son likes to hunt big game, which almost all are endangered.

I'm not for bald eagles being hunted whether they are protected or not but I don't see anything patriotic about a bird (I get the symbolism). If our national bird was a chicken, I'd still eat it and see nothing unpatriotic doing so.

The football players are taking a knee because they were told that was the "patriotic" way of making their protest. They aren't protesting "America" or the flag. They are protesting the way blacks are treated by the cops. Whether that is a legitimate argument or not, it's got nothing to do with patriotism. It's just making a political statement.

Again, whether a football game is a good place to do that or not is not the point. It still has nothing to do with patriotism.

I'm sorry, but you are missing the point. I was talking about Trump. Perhaps I was too obtuse.

They probably weren't "told" anything. They do their own thinking. These aren't Trump voters we're talking about.

Kaepernick originally wasn't "taking a knee" and people were complaining about him "disrespecting the flag". That wasn't his intent. As I recall some Navy SEAL suggested the taking a knee thing.

Whatever, that's not really the point.

In point of observation, it's hard to rule it out as a major point. It comes up a lot, along with the attribution of unpatriotic motive and disrespect for the military and so forth.
The invisibility of the players's intentions and motives and thinking, the disregard of all that in pursuit of public conflict over patriotism and the flag and the military and attributions of dishonorable motive, is front and center here.

actually its not inaccurate Kapernick who started the protests public eye started kneeling during the anthem because a verteran told him its was more respectful than staying in the locker room which was what he did intially. but yes you are correct they weren't told to protest.

Well, it was. So were national parks and baby animals (and baby Mexicans). But nobody is protected anymore; they're armed or they're game.

Those issues are about patriotism only in a roundabout way, which is dependent on one's understanding of patriotism.
If it means reverence for symbols, then some people are acting in an unpatriotic way.
If it means love of country, then protesting its wrongs and preserving its wildlife are patriotic acts.
