Blogs were the primary from of publishing before large scale social media platforms came along. I had a LiveJournal account (technically still do) where I published all the stuff I now post to Facebook. You had more room and more freedom to post what you wanted, but the downside was that people had to find your blog to follow you. Facebook makes writer/reader connections far easier.
