On the back of this story ,can anyone give me the low down on how to influence public opinion in a predictable way by creating sources of disinformation? Any specific examples would be of interest.... Is it a two edged sword or do autocratic regimes hold the advantage against open democracies (if this is is a verified phenomenon? (as I am not disputing) http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-44153923
You mean of its own people.Yes of course (specific examples always welcome even if "bleeding obvious") but what of attacking perceived enemies outside one's own borders /jurisdiction?
I mean't specific examples of disinformation within N Korea. "Bleeding obvious" was intended * to convey "It is bleeding obvious** they are there but specific examples of them are of interest" (except that that is not what the OP was about). * poorly expressed ** without a free press in a country like NKorea disinformation is the default mode.
This is the classic read in the area: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/12617.Manufacturing_Consent From easily available pop culture, a review of the propaganda operations of the Third Reich in Germany would be an obvious source of examples etc. If willing to dig a bit, and think on one's own (because more recent stuff hasn't sorted out yet), some time hanging around the leftwing blogs in the US can enlighten - along with backreading on some topic like the propaganda operations that led to the US invasion of Iraq in 2003. The overriding importance of visual imagery and oral "communication", with concomitant purposeful squelching of written communication in general, would be an example of what one can learn thereby.
You don't have to actually create sources of disinformation you just have to skew the media reporting of the information to suit your purposes. "Weapons of Mass Deception" by Sheldon Rampton and John Stauber is one good example of the use of media analysis to determine if this type of propaganda has occurred.
