Someone i was talking to tried to convince me that flat earth theory is alive and well. And they belive it is.
How can Flat earth theory be alive and well?
We have longitude and latitude, many pilots, miles deep bore holes and mines, mariners, and space probes, compass readings even.
How could the earth be flat?

From what I can gather there seems to be some folk who take it that is what their religious book tells them.
There would be others who may adopt it in an effort to recieve attention.
But it is curious that the idea exists given the evidence that the Earth is a globe.

Everything is "alive and well" on the internet, for those who can't separate nonsense from reality.

Book or no book, Internet or not. It is curious to me there are people who believe
And Yes Sama there are many who cant differentiate. Some believe the movie idea and think our reality is just a Matrix!

Hop on over to the 'We Never Went to the Moon' thread to see how people are quite capable of believing whatever they want, despite metric-buttloads of physical evidence.

In my personal opinion, this type of behavior is a backlash against a world that is too complex for some to understand, and too populated to allow many people to have a comfortable world view. So they draw a line, and say:

This is where I take a stand
. I believe what I believe and no one else is going to make me feel dumb. It is better for my ego if I convince myself that no one really knows anything, and therefore I know as much as anyone.

It's a way of defining one's identity in a sea of apparent anonymity. It doesn't matter if one defines oneself in a way that others ridicule, since that only reinforces one's belief that one is alone against the world with just my personal smarts as a shield and weapon.

And they used to be the creepy guy who put up posters around the pedestrian mall. Now they make noise out of proportion to their numbers.

Full disclaimer: I'm a "card carrying" Flatter. Joined in 1982 when I found the address in "The People's Almanac" by Irving Wallace. Also joined the International Frisbee Association at the same time. It IS boring in the Persian Gulf.

The people who believe this shit are just dumb retards who gobble up any nutty bullshit they see plastered on a computer screen.

I know the connection might be vague but when I hear about flat Earth I imagine spherical shaped Pizza. The then the problem is how to get it thoroughly cooked in the center. I think that thought is an appropriate response to the idea of the Earth being flat.

The geometry is impossible, so just announce the system you prefer and damn all those who doubt you.

I think it has its roots in conspiracy theories. While the flat earth theory might seem nonsensical to most people who subscribe to any sort of scientific- and evidence-based way of thinking, for the flat-earther they believe that government and giant corporations are lying to the human populace, and therefore believe that space travel, photos of the earth from space etc, are basically conceived into tricking us for some nefarious purpose.

    From R1D2 Post1
It could survive as long as there are folks living in states like Kansas & places like the middle of the Sahara Desert.

There once was a Flat Earth Society which met regularly in a London Pub. They were affluent Englishmen with a sense of humour.

They sold a few memberships & collected dues for a while from some fundamentalist Christian cowboys in Texas.

They gave circa 50 English pounds to an American astronaut for trick photography with the remark: “An untrained eye could easily by fooled into thinking that the photo showed that the Earth is a sphere.”

Their artists's sketch of the Flat Earth was delightful. It was a circular disk with Europe in the center & Western Africa hanging over the edge perpendicular to the disk.

We have observational evidence of spherical planets in the solar system.

I wonder if the Earth is the only flat planet. If so, it would be interesting to see explanations for some known data about the Earth.

Particularly the geometry of large triangles on the Earth's surface.

    ♫I've been around the world,
    Met a million girls...♫

I've also watched ships come up over the horizon. Odd that the radar couldn't see them until I could also. Almost like something was in the way.

If the earth were flat, cats would have knocked everything over the edge by now.

    Okaaay

    Questions

How can one join one of these corporations so I can also lie to the Minions?

    And

How did the believers gain the knowledge that they are being lied to?

    And

Why haven't the Giant Corporations shut them down?

    ?

any flat-earthers managed to explain why the sun & moon travel across the sky, where they go, and how they managed to come back on to the other side ?
where do they go when we cant see them ?

As I "understand" (I think) the sun is a lamp and gets switched off

But it's been a long time since I was taught Flatgeology and Flatcosmology

Back when I was in 2D school
