"Ghost in the Shell" for me, I think.
Or "Wings of Honneamise" - that's a great film.
"Akira" is a classic as well.

    Other notable entrances:
    "Metropolis"
    "Princess Mononoke"

I've had "Spirited Away" in my collection for years but for some reason have never gotten around to watching it.

Definitely my favorite (though my exposure to Anime is limited.)

I watched Akira as my intro to the genre, as it was touted as the best.
I'm afraid I did not understand it. Why did he grow into a monster? (And why did it take so much screen time for the actual transformation?)

(Oh yeah. Just reviewed the plot summary.)

I find the Studio Ghibli stuff charming, and much is quality anime, but I find the subject matter generally less appealing than the more sci-fi fare.
For example, I'd much rather watch Appleseed than Howl's Moving Castle, and Patlabor than Ponyo.
Those choices may not be the better quality but I find them more enjoyable.
