It's a revealing little detail in John chapter eleven. Here we have the creator of the universe crying because one person died. Apparently Jesus was told that Lazarus was about to die but it took 4 days to get to him, by which time Lazarus was dead and starting to stink badly. Nevertheless, Jesus raised him from the dead and all were amazed. There are many problems with this story and are easy to spot. Whoever made up this story didn't think it through. A God who can heal at a distance would not cry. If he did cry then it proves he was not God nor the son of God. It proves he had no magic powers and no contact with the True God.

Would you perhaps care to consider history? I mean, Christians have been fighting over this for centuries. Yet you have managed an inquiry so devoid of any relevant context it is hard to figure where to begin.

Think of it this way: Over three millennia of cultural history piled up to sort through, and the most superficial joke we might come up with counts as a proper theological consideration?

Okay, explain the joke, then, please:

Like this statement. The most obvious explanation is that it cares not a whit for history or the reality represented therein.

What do you mean, "whoever"? What does it mean, as such, to "think it through"? The most apparent applications are ahistorical nigh on fantastic. Functional applications, meanwhile, are absent. Can you provide functional applications to help your statement make sense?

Tiassa I absolutely love your stlye of writting however if one has to explain a joke then it ceases to be a joke.

To an athiest the whole deal is a joke and they are not interested in context but merely dividing the joke into countless sections.

Athiest and thiestis think they are discussing a mutual topic but one merely discusses athieism whilst the other discusses theism.

But please write I get such pleasure in reading anything you write.
I now come here not for the science but for the fun and the joy I find in your expression.

The question is why did Jesus not raise others from the dead and why he does not bother to do so to this day.
Are there no inoccents that deserve the benefit of such a power.

John 11:35. You choose the shortest verse in the Bible to ask for commentary? The short answer is Empathy. Let me paint a lengthier picture:

    John 11:1-6
Lazaus is sick, one of his sisters sends for the healer, Jesus. The other sister is mentioned as "that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment....". A reference found in all four gospels. Jesus says this will be an opportunity to glorify god by increasing faith and his love for Lazaus and his sisters is emphasized yet he waits 2 more day to make his journey.

    John 11:19-27
Lazaus' sisters are in mourning and other jews come to comfort them (wailing and crying ... you've been to wakes like that, yes). Martha, the less hysterical of the sisters goes to meet the healer at the edge of town. She professes her faith in him. "Had he been there a little sooner all would be fine". Jesus says he will be resurrected and Martha answers in faith; "In the resurrection at the last day".

    John 11:28-32
Martha goes and quietly tells Mary that Jesus has arrived but she is an emotional reck and jumps up to run out to him. All the jews in her house followed to see what stirred her to leave in haste. Mary finds Jesus and falls down at his feet crying, sobbing, full out in agony. With tears running down her face, grasping at his legs she says in faith; "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died".

Now this is the important verse that answers your question.

    John 11:33-36
When Jesus saw her weeping and all the jews with her crying also, he groaned in the spirit and was troubled.
"Where have you laid him?" He askes and then "Jesus wept" and all the jews there saw with thier own eyes his love.

In other words, these people moved him. Through thier faith in him, thier love for each other, thier pangs of heart and loss. Most notably that of the sorrow that Mary felt, the women that symbolically anoint him and wiped his feet with her hair. He simply was overcome with love and empathy.

That was the motivate of the author of John. He took a parable from Luke 16:19-31 (Lazaus in heaven and the rich man in hell) and depicts the Logos, the "Word" in John 1, as flesh and blood incarcerate. This story fits into the first of the four part sections of the only non-synoptic gosple (book of signs section). I hope this agnostic was able to answer your question. I "study" this stuff for reasons other than faith.

If anyone can be resurrected, what's so special about the resurrection of Jesus?

    excellent question.
and... can jesus resurrect people ?

i would imagine (just for scientific notation and historical note) people waking from comas &/or unconsciousness would be people raised from the dead.
being brought back from deaths door by medicine from Flu and other such illnesses was probably considered being raised from the dead.

You should of looked up the word "resurrect" before posting this drivel.

Maybe read about what Jesus did after being resurrected, he wasn't exactly Frankenstein. But hold on, you'll stop reading the bible now as you just argue bible passages on a whim.

That is an excellent question. One that deserves it's own thread instead of being buried here.

Matthew 27:50-54 says the resurrection of the saints already happened.

Two other people besides Jesus also went to heaven without seeing "corruption". Enoch and Elijah. Both referenced in the Gospels as Elias and "that other prophet". The old testament gives their resurrection more "fully" (Genesis 5:18-24 and 2Kings 2:1-13).

Paul puts it like this .... Adam was the human that brought the curse of death on mankind. Jesus was the human that brought the promise of everlasting life. Both the children of God (according to the text we have).

The restoration to life of that which is dead. Are you afraid Jesus wasn't special? We all get resurrected eventually. Allegedly.
