Ok, here me out. I'm new to a lot of social media since I'm 14 but over youtube there are videos about Glitches in the Matrix, with famous youtubers jumping on the bandwagon. I decided to see where they originate from. The posts are all really weird in that subreddit, with lots of stuff that to me anyways, is sci-fi. Now I don't know how physics works but I'm pretty sure things like 'I saw myself when I was older' and 'My gf teleported into the desert' and 'I went back in time and saw JFK' intrude on physics. These people report they were with multiple people who all saw these 'glitches' happen, for example on the 'glitch in the matrix' sub reddit the most highly upvoted thread is about a group of people blinking out of existence right in front of people. No noise, flash of light or anything, just ceased to exist. There was also a guy who was with friends when he said he saw his friend teleport and another one where time stopped in a busy shopping store, walking through solid walls, etc.

I looked for a place to ask and this seems like a nice community to ask questions about physics so I just wanted to ask,

What do you physicists think of these 'glitches' and does physics care about them?

I think the YouTubers are confusing reality with a movie.

I'll do my best, eventhough I'm not technically a real physicist... only a bachelor's in astrophysics.

You have to be very careful with what you see on Youtube. People on youtube are selling themselves as a brand and need viewers in order to promote themselves to complete an endless train of money gathering. What works for one person, others will see and start to copy by changing slight things. Just because they are famous youtubers doesn't mean they know squat about physics/science/etc... which, flipped, doesn't mean they don't know either

You will find many people with different opinions on what exists and doesn't in physics. What can exist, might exist, is possible, etc. The thing about physics though, is we apply science to get answers. Science is not just a topic, but in a way it is a way of life. In science, anyone is allowed to make a claim. It can be about anything, doesn't matter. However, whoever makes that claim, it is their job to prove that claim. It is NOT the job of someone else to disprove it (granted, this happens a lot). This means, you have to make a choice for yourself on what you believe based on knowledge that you have acquired.

For example. One of the best things to apply is Occam's Razor (basically... the answer with the fewest assumptions is more likely correct). It is not 100% accurate, but it rarely leads you astray.
Let's take that claim 'I saw myself when I was older'... Which is better... A: the individual time traveled not himself, but went back to another time in the universe while his time-frame remained the same, which means the planet was in a different location in space, therefore he not only time-traveled but was teleported to the exact location in space where the planet was and landed perfectly on his feet... or B: he saw someone who looked like him.
Next claim, "My gf teleported into the desert". A: An individual was teleported, atom by atom, rearranged perfectly, thoughts and memories passed through teleportation too, landed perfectly on the desert (not 50 feet above the desert or 50 feet below the ground)... or B: they lied.

Personally, I don't believe any of that... However, I do admit the possibility that I am wrong... but refuse to believe myself to be wrong... make sense?

I don't need to disprove any of the above, I just simply don't believe it. I don't need to disprove it either. If they want me to believe it, they need to give me evidence in a scientific manner. Magic, unfortunately, does not exists. Only 2 things exist. Physics, and physics we don't understand

Physicists think nothing of them. Anecdotes are not physics.

Not saying weird things definitely didn't happen, just saying there's nothing to study here.

Maybe not, but do you think anything's going on here since thousands of people are reporting the same thing?

The people who post these stories seem to go out of their way to debunk any rational explanation - for example, the person who vanished was walking 3 feet in front of them, in a field, with no trees or bushes that could hide the person from view, and they were walking with a friend when the guy just blinked out of existence right in front of their eyes in plain sight. They never report any sound, flash of light or explosion - nothing around the person who vanished was affected; it was as if someone hit the delete button on the person.

The top post currently on /r/glitch_in_the_matrix is the same thing, but with a group of people suddenly ceasing to exist at once.

Against my better judgement I decided to check this glitch in the matrix link

Didn't see anything about the group of people

I skimmed through a couple of the post there

All i saw were piles and piles of Cowpat

    Not even quality Cowpat

    I would agree with this

The Cowpat in the post you have been checking do not exist no matter how convincing the posters are going out of their way to debunk rational explainations

Nobody can provide a real rational explaination to a Cowpat post but posters can easily dismiss any attempt to explain by adding more details to adapt the story

The infamous case of a man named 'Orion Williamson'

Anyone know about this case or what became of it? It was covered by a man named Ambrose Bierce in a series of newspaper snippets called ''can such things be?'' and in that is the story entitled ''the difficulty of crossing a field'', where he reports that a man named Williamson was seen crossing a field and he suddenly blinked out of existence. There was not a sound, explosion, flash of light or anything and there was nothing he could have went behind. He vanished in plain sight.

I'm curious why this isn't the top disappearance case, since this one pretty much violates the fundamental laws of physics.

As far as I know this case hasn't been solved and remains a mystery. There are other cases that are nearly identical, such as the case of David Lang. These cases are pretty well documented and multiple sources have mentioned them.

Aaaaand did they make a missing person's report?
    Was there an investigation?
Was the reporter arrested on suspicion of murder (as the most likely suspect?)
How did the family take the disappearance? Were they willing to take it at face value?
    Did it make world-wide news?

What did the police report say?
Was the witness arrested for murder?
Was the town literally overrun with reporters from all over the world?
How long did the family investigate after their loved one vanished forever?
Perhaps there is a more mundane explanation for this ... newspaper snippet.

Thousands of people also swear up and down that their own religion (not bringing it to that discussion here, just as an example) is the one true one... not everyone can be right, which means millions to billions must be wrong.

Lead poisoning ? maybe the witness was a hat maker.
i beleive large mixes of Absinthe & cocaine & opium were quite the trend back then.

Or just walked off when nobody was looking. People are always hyper-alert and very aware ... after the event.

Heh. Well, my point was more simply that people disappearing is not an event that is forgotten about or brushed under the rug, like a UFO sighting or Loch Ness sighting.

A disappeared person either comes back (in which case they say 'what are you talking about, I just stepped behind that tree'), or a manhunt is conducted by the family and the police until they're found.

No matter which way you cut it, this account is missing critical details about what allegedly happened afterwards. In other words: it's been altered to contain only the juicy bits. In other words, it is just a story.

Right. That should send up a giant red flag about this story.

This is not the same as a UFO sighting or a Loch Ness sighting. This is a person. With friends, family, a job and a community.

If somebody had really disappeared, this story wouldn't simply be a curious anecdote; it would be a manhunt, seen on the national news.

This is not a trivial point. This story must have a resolution, and it's either a mundane outcome or a spectacular outcome. And we've ruled out spectacular...

What we know for certain is that the actual resolution to this story has been left off (because that would not make the story very juicy). i.e. this story has been fictionalized.
