When a belief system becomes so ingrained that any challenge to its truth is perceived as a threat? Forgive the below picture. Looking at it now, the symbolism is quite striking. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipe..._face_south_tower_after_plane_strike_9-11.jpg
Sorry. I'm totally missing your message. What does 9/11 have to do with belief? What is the symbolism you speak of?
Oh. You mean the motive of the terrorists? Well, for starters, I think the terrorist attack has more to do with Jingoism - how much meddling the West has done in the Middle East over the last century - manipulating relationships and economies and even emplacing preferred leaders . They're pretty grumpy about that.
You shouldn't have beliefs in the first pleace that can't be challenged or created by legitimate facts.
Is Western culture a threat to the belief system they hold. How often has America been refereed to as "Satan"? What was the motive of destroying the Twin Towers? What did those buildings represent?
I think the motive has been corrupted by Western propaganda and popular media. Here's a bit of light reading, some of which is directly from Bin Laden himself: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motives_for_the_September_11_attacks Note that religious motivation comprises only a single, very brief paragraph.
But that's what we do. Even scientist develop theories that later can be refuted. The problem with people is that we develop beliefs based on life experiences, which isn't really a science.
I think Scientists come at science first from observations and the questioning of why From that comes the idea - is it because? You know the rest - test the idea - drill down to why this way? and can it happen another way? etc etc I would contend beliefs come more from being told something which plays to your general disposition and the information not being to closely examined Fool me once shame on me Fool me twice shame on you Fool me three times - OK I'm a believer ***** I thought god was only true in fairy tales Meant for someone else but not for me But god was out to get me That's the way it seemed He haunted all of my dreams Then I heard the story, now I'm a believer Not a trace, of doubt in my mind I'm in heaven, and now I'm a believer I couldn't leave him if I tried With apologies to I'm a Believer Smash Mouth https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smash_Mouth ***** Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!

I did not know that. New piece of trivia to amaze my sister with. I would sneak into her room when she was at school to listen to her Monkees & Neil Diamond records. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
I didn't either, until I Googled it. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! I knew Monkeys was first, but wanted to get my facts straight before correcting someone else. My wife is a music fan, and I've learned just how much music is written by someone other than who performed it.
Interpretation of the environment is subjective. People can help us along the way--scientists and philosophers--but in the daily experience it does come down to the individual. Everyone searches for a template from which to work. When that template is threatened, their world is being disturbed, creating anxiety and uncertainty.
Indeed. And a big factor, as we here are too aware, is whether the individual generally places value on the credibility of scientific reasearch.
