Years back while in Italy I had the opportunity to view The Statue of David. The thought in my mind while looking at it was perfection. I couldn't define why it was perfect, but it spoke to me on some level I couldn't understand. Also, I had an appreciation for the intent, motivation and effort that must have gone into its creation. On the surface it's just a naked guy with a towel flung over his shoulder, but it reaches deeper than one might expect.

This gives thought that genius, creativity and madness somehow compliment each other--the eternal artist trying to realize the abstraction of life, searching for its expression in reality through his work. Perhaps the frustration of never fully realizing the abstraction eventually drives the genius mad.

Van Gogh may have been mad, but I am under the impression most great artists were reasonably stable mentally, so your connection between creativity seems a bit of a stretch.

Maybe. Having worked with the mentally ill, I found most to be highly intelligent. Creativity seems to be linked with intelligence too.

It is religion that sends folk mad because of the guilt and not being able to be natural and normal and seeing reproduction as sin...having to believe crazy ideas is what sends many crazy.

I agree that some people can obsess over religion.

Yes I tend to obsess over religion and the concept makes me mad.

LOL. I don't know that I obsess over it, but I do have a connection with it, so I think about it often.
