Lost in the furors, the underlying situation: Trump is a Republican, and under his Presidency the Republicans are winning.
As was pointed out a hundred pages ago, and in many other places, the role of the Republican Congress and White House is to cut taxes and regulations and curbs on rich people in the US. This they are doing. And whether or not the country can recover from another round of Republican tax and reg cuts is an open question.

Post-Alabama you may want to amend this statement.

And all of it can be undone as it has in the past. Human history has a nasty habit of repeating the same mistakes over and over again.

Post Alabama the Republican tax bills are a couple of weeks closer to being enacted, the demolition of Social Security and Medicare has entered countdown, and Trump is apparently setting himself up to fire Mueller.
And nobody even knows, for sure, who came out better in Alabama - a Party that can run a removed judge and child molester against a known, popular, and competent DA and still get within a point or two of winning has not come out looking weak or loser-like.
By war, disaster, depression, and many years of time, ending in a new political order built on the ruins of the old one.

The fact that it took their candidate being a sexual predator and pedophile to cause a "deep red" state to even consider a Democrat (and even then, it wasn't that the average white voter changed their minds, no - many of them just stayed home. We have the Minority Vote to thank for this outcome), and it was still within two percentage points... that's terrifying.

It has very nearly proven the point - a Republican could go out and shoot someone in cold blood and violate their body, and their "base" would still vote for them.

Engaging Trump's Base is an effort in futility. It is a cult, not a thinking political entity.

Unfortunately, with things as gerrymandered and voter-suppressed as they are... they don't need a majority to win.

We shouldn't live in a country that so narrowly defeats Roy Moore. But we do. So let's celebrate

I for one am rooting for humanity's destruction!! Every living thing on the planet will breath a huge sigh of relief. Come join me!

    From the link:
This is one place the intellectual elite lose their bearings, even in rhetorically stipulating to some dubious claim to get on with things.
The Trump voter wasn't buying a tax break by tolerating racism and sexual assault and xenophobia. The Trump voter was voting for racism and sexism and xenophobia, and maybe getting a tax break as a cherry on top. The Trump voter regarded Trump as better protection against sexual assault or any other crime, including abortion, than Clinton - plus maybe a tax break. The only cause for nose-holding among Trump voters was his vulgarity and Uncle Buck embarrassments - not his worldview, policies, etc.

I agree with this for his hard core supporters. It is really embarrassing to be an US citizen at this point in our history....

You know, I was thinking that Trumps approval rating is about 35% which is really low, but that 35% will almost certainly vote for him. The typical eligible voter turn out for presidential elections is about 60%. 35% doesn't seem so low in light of that horrifying statistic.

Is there any evidence that young voters are less likely to vote for Trump than older ones? Is the demographics against him?

Also is there any evidence that regions more obviously affected by climate change would be affected similarly (be more anti Trump)?

BTW is Trump likely to fire Mueller soon (or at all)?

White voters, all categories except women with post-graduate degrees, voted for Trump. The demographics are against him - whites are a decreasing fraction of the US population.
Alaska and Florida both voted for Trump.
There are several indications he plans to fire Mueller, and is waiting for a better moment. (The Republican media have been calling for Mueller's resignation, running bs about his bias and wasting of taxpayer money, and generally organizing the public perceptions in apparent preparation)

    What about the young specifically?

Your Alaska/Florida observation seems valid . Perhaps the tide will turn against the climate deniers there also (are the young more up to speed with man influenced climate change ?They have children there too don't they?)

My opinion? Each generation is a little less racist, so the Reps will need a new schtick eventually. But they are going to be poorer (most of them), with the insularity and insecurity entailed, they seem to know very little about even fairly recent history (making them fairly easy to manipulate in the short term), and we're running out of time - and there's always religion.

Speculation: the 2020 census during a Presidential election could mark a watershed. If the US cannot conduct it well, accurately and fairly and openly and in good order, it will remain a banana republic for the foreseeable future - a failure as a First World nation, unable to recover from the Republican takeover. With the world's most dangerous military.

Climate change denial works in may ways... The degree of acceptance is varied.
Talking about the future political state of the USA with out considering the immanent nature of climate change is indicative of denial.
The scientists have estimated that the time frame of 40 years or so is appropriate but often persons fail to realize we have to get there and that it is not a bed of roses and then suddenly the rains come.

2017 USA climate disasters have almost broken the insurance industry.

The point being that party politics will become more and more irrelevant and the need for "Real" leadership will become more and more urgent.

Hurricane Harvey/Irma alone cost an estimated 150-200 billion USD

IMO talking about the future political landscape (USA or Globally) with out serious consideration given to climate change and the psychological and material impacts on the human race is naive and indicative of denial.

    Especially the psychological.

    Example:
Trump is being primarily supported by evangelical end timers...( see Book of Revelations) IMO
ISIL was primarily driven by Islamic eschatology (end times) IMO

there is so much more to post on this but I will leave it at that.
