I wore one for years, two piece or mostly three piece even in summer because you know if you are in a profession or business you wear a suit. But what a non function unit of apparel. Sure the pants work but the coat and vest never kept me warm with buttons only half way up. And yet the suit seems here to stay. Alex
I agree about the non-functional nature of the suit. I think less and less people now wear them everyday however. Some jobs that used to more or less require them no longer do and there are many instances now when people wear them only on days when they see clients. It also depends on the local culture. You see less in the U.S. as you move from the East Coast to the West Coast. It used to be that the guy with a good job wore a suit. Now the guy with a really good job never wears a suit. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! The tie was always the killer for me and well as those uncomfortable shirts. It's also too easy to wear out or poke or tear expensive suit pants. The whole thing is just uncomfortable and ridiculous.
Personally, I like the way I feel in a 3 piece suit. Though, now, it;s mostly flannel and cargo pants.
I don't own one, and no one at work wears them. Maybe the CEO will wear a suit jacket and jeans, on a special occasion, but that's as far as it goes.
As recently as a hundred years ago, all men wore suits. A farmer would wear a suit (maybe no tie) while plowing the south forty. His Sunday-go-to-meeting suit was just in better shape than his everyday suit.
I've never been able to afford one, but have worn a tux on occasion and found it comfortable - if a bit constraining in what one could do without damaging it. They seem to me like outfits designed to create the appearance of being fully dressed in multiple layers without being too hot, without sweltering. The tie aspect is goofy. In self-presentation, high school kids: I know a pretty good math teacher who never wears one to avoid adding intimidation to the topic - help the students relax. I know a pretty good writing teacher who always wears one to add intimidation to the topic - make sure it's taken seriously.
Oh the neck tie. What a stupid piece of gear. How I hated the tie. All thru high school I had to wear a tie and all my working life every day of the week and if you went to church, which I did up to about 14 years old, you had to wear a tie. When I went bush I laid out all my suits on the walls of a dam I had put in to provide something to hold the top soil..finally they were useful. All the ties went into the garden to hold up plants and again they finally were if some use. It is funny how folk regard a suit. I recall at a pub (yet another one) where I played pool a guy came in with tats all over looking like king of the Hell's Angles. I thought wow that guy looks fierce. Over games of pool we became friends. He told me his recollection of first seeing me. "When I saw you in your suit I though this guy is a heavy probably head of the Mafia. Alex
I did have some flash suits, one in denim which was very now, then, and a white cotton one with bamboo buttons which was probably the best one as it did look cool. Alex
