In my post # 59 I asked you a question . about the difference . whats the difference between a scientist that knows and a research scientist ?

you have know Idea of the difference , quite frankly I was surprised you couldn't .

you should know the difference ,

everybody should know the difference , not just pad .

river, I'm not falling for your loaded nonsense...We all know the literal difference between a scientists and a research scientist. And most here including me, as has been pointed out to you countless times, can sort the wheat from the chaff. Chaff being of course the agenda laden IDers, god botherers, paranormal nonsense, anti science nuts and trolls.

I will add though that not all researchers are scientists, but certainly all scientists are researchers. I don't believe you are either river, despite past claims.

    @ river,

Have you forgotten it was a scientist who was the whistle blower on Big Tobacco.
It was management who perjured themselves in court and ruined the career of the scientist in the process. Scientists have no axe to grind in the Capitalist market place.

Scientists do not determine how their science is used. It is the for-profit corporations who often misuse scientific discoveries, because they must show bigger profits to their stock holders. To my knowledge very few scientists are stockholders in large corporations.

Science can be used for good or evil, but it is not up to the scientists. However many scientist have warned against the misuse of their life's work. Einstein unlocked the knowledge of the inherent power of matter with his equation, E = Mc^2

Today many countries rely on nuclear power for their electricity, which is a good thing.

Unfortunately many countries also are using this knowledge to build nuclear bomb, but you can't lay that at Einstein's doorstep.

In fact he warned the world against the use of nuclear power for war purposes. He undestood the possible dangers of misuse of his discovery.

β€œThe unleashed power of the atom has changed everything except our thinking. Thus, we are drifting toward catastrophe beyond conception. We shall require a substantially new manner of thinking if mankind is to survive.”

I understand there is a brand of water claiming to be X number of years old (not sure if 1,000s or 1,000,000s years old) due to it originating in a glacier
The label does have a expiry date???
Not sure of the cost but if you have the money fly to the glacier and licking it might be cheaper

True, they are actually planning to hack pieces of ice from the North Pole and tow them to land where they can bottle the sequestered unpolluted water from tens of thousands of years of clean air.

I believe you can actually see layers of clean and dirty ice (from meteor impacts, big volcanic eruptions etc)
I read an article about it, As long as there is money to be made, they'll find a way to mine the poles or old glaciers for clean water.

It's really depressing to see what we have been able to spoil in the few hundred years since the industrial revolution

    And what do you want?

Scientists are people. They're not claiming to be gods.
Some people trust too much and then get let down when their idols turn out to be human.

Riv, by example, what profession were you in before you retired? I'm pretty sure I can make a case for
    - setting up your former profession as worthy of idolatry beyond reason,
    - then showing a few cases where they acted human,
    - then judging the entire profession based on those examples,
    - then disparaging the entire profession as needing to have their ivory tower kicked out from under their feet,
    - and finally presuming that, though I've never been in that profession - which has been built on millennia of wisdom and knowledge - I can go on a forum and presume to know better than them, imply because I have ideaz.

Heck, I can do that for my own profession.

The problem comes in step number 1, where you set up your expectations, dooming others to fail to meet them.

What I want is for people to understand the place of scientists in the big picture , of our world .

Scientist for the most part are simple people , they are not Einsteins , Paulings etc. And good people .

The scientists I challenge are those that knowingly do research against Humanity .

Search for knowledge is not itself bad/evil/immoral.
It is the application of that knowledge that can be reprehensible.

Einstein and his colleagues learned about the nature of the atom. From that, we now have clean energy that is helping to save our world.
The militarization of that knowledge killed a lot of people (though it may have saved a lot too).

Also a better understanding of the Quacks, Charlatans, pseudoscientists, religious fanatics.
Good. As long as you are aware of what science is, and those that would use it against humanity, which in the main are multi nationals and other greedy orginizations.

Yes, such as declaring open season on killing elephants or whales. Fortunately enough good people have spoken up for this to have been "put aside" for now.

Oh I forgot, the ones declaring open season on wantonly killing wildlife are not scientists, but greedy ignorant self-serving individuals who believe they own the world, the rest be damned..

Don't complain, I'm in your corner.
Taking care of the ecosystem is an important part of being a Humanist, IMO
Oh , like Dr. Mengele, etc.? I agree.

If "good" was a common Tulpa, the world would be a better place.
The problem lies in the interpretation of what is a "good" Tulpa.

Some people think Capitalism is good, others think that Socialism is good. But in the end it comes down to a matter of degree.
One thing is clear to me; Pure Capitalism is not compatible with pure Democracy. In fact, the purest form of Capitalism is slavery. It saves on labor costs.

Now that we have near full employment, instead of raising salaries or cutting taxes for the working poor, the new tax plan cuts taxes on the wealthiest and raises taxes on the poor.

This is supposed to make us competitive with slave systems in other countries ? IMO, the term "trickle down" economy is the most devious economic plan ever invented

Pure cummunism does. It compells compliance, but prople do not elect their representatives..
Pure democratic socialism does not, IMO. The people choose their representatives.

This is why Capitalism is not compatible with Democratic Socialism.

Make the telling of lies in politics, on first offence, a capital crime and if they lie again something harsher.

Clinical depression means one is sick, which can be cured with medication suitably prescribed.
And as you seem to observe, from my take at least, things just " are" however we qualify as either good or bad.
Can we not chose to call more things good and less things bad.
Look for the silver lining in the clouds.
