it does make you wonder if republicans/conservatives are the devil incarnate, right? because their motives, policies and actions don't ever quite make sense. they are driven either by hate or greed so much, they are blinded by how negatively it would impact their own offspring or their own party members as well as society itself. they are living contradictions.

for instance, how they are supposedly pro-life but want to implement policies such as this.

has anyone ever noticed conservatives are insane? have you ever had a debate with one and you realized it is no different than speaking with a psychopath?

Student loans are a huge scam. We should address this on a deeper level, not just make it easier to pay back.

The original idea was to enable more folks to afford higher education. The problem is that, as more funding was made more readily available, the schools realized they could cash in and raised their prices. There was nothing in place to prevent this behavior, as entire generations were told that they had to go to college to have a decent future; predatory pseudo-capitalism at its most obvious.

What's pseudo about it? It's just capitalism.

I dunno if it can be called capitalism when demand can be so artificially created, can it?

    Demand is demand.

Well, but demand is demand even when the government mandates you buy Vlasic pickles. Doesn't mean that's capitalism.

It is capitalism - just not well-regulated ("free") market. Note the proliferation of for-profit and other private (capitalist) schools, the competition for students with infrastructure etc, the involvement of bankers and financiers, under this management - classic capitalist economic activity.

Are the GOP the ones who generally don't have to worry about student loans to begin with, as daddy will just pay for everything?

    Pretty much.

Though I'd venture that's just the upper echelon. The rest are just empty vessels with a pile of shit for brains who'll pretty much follow anything/anyone that makes them feel good about their vileness.

    It's a toupee.
e.g. Before there was Roy Moore, there was Cliven Bundy:

Many of these regard a desire to go to college without playing football as a sign of snooty elitism anyway, and are convinced that what happens there is brainwashing and fake knowledge.

Well it will not affect their offspring or their family, because they are wealthy and do not need to access financial aid.

They simply don't care about anyone else who does. Well they do, but not for the reasons some might think..

Because educated people are less likely to vote for the GOP.

For example, prior to the last US elections, Pew Research came out with something quite interesting:

In Pew Research Center’s August survey, registered voters with a college degree or more education favor Clinton over Trump by 23 percentage points (52% Clinton vs. 29% Trump) in a four-way contest that included Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson (supported by 11% of voters with at least a college degree) and Green Party candidate Jill Stein (4%).

By contrast, voters who do not have a college degree were more divided in their preferences: 41% backed Trump, 36% Clinton, 9% Johnson and 5% Stein
    .

So Nate Silver went through and looked at the most educated counties in the US (ie ones with a population who had college degrees or higher) and the ones with the smallest population of college educated voters after the last election.

The results were shocking and telling...

I say telling, because cutting financial aid to college students, is a way to ensure that less people attend college and become better educated, which in the long run, ensures the GOP's political survival, because those uneducated voters are more likely to vote for them, than for the Democrats.

    Noticed? Or known?

The GOP practice an insidious method of politics. This is just further proof of it.

Back in the 70s my wife paid her way through college working part time at a cannery. Her parents did help a bit, but she paid her own tuition. I find it disturbing that a young person should start life with a mountain of debt, but I suspect that the schools are more than happy to capitalize on guaranteed loans when the government is backing them.

Used to be grants, not just loans - and the people "capitalizing" nowdays are the lenders, who have their hooks in the most productive and better paid fraction of the citizenry for decades after they graduate - protected by law.

The other interesting aspect is that these loans are tapping a large honey pot of housing equity that the bubble didn't grab. If one interprets the setup as essentially extortion or squeeze, as part of the equity-mining of the entire economy such as the payday lenders set up in the slums, the pledging of the housing equity that has backed these loans (and the derivatives based on these loans) is an extension of the lending practices post Glass-Steagal.
