So, yesterday I told my barber to just cut off all of my hair. After a moment of hesitation she pulled out the sheers and went to work, leaving about an eighth of an inch in length. I love it. I got up this morning and looked in the mirror, realizing there was no need to comb my hair. I have a beard, but only because I'm too lazy to be bothered with shaving. About once a month I cut it down with a beard trimmer. When I was a kid, my hair was a big deal for me. It was a statement of some kind. Now that I'm older it has no importance and is more of a hassle to maintain. I'm curious if others feel the same or whether their hair is somehow a statement about who they are.
Shaved my head back in the '90s. Put the barber money in a jar. Today I have a badly looted toy money jar.
I regularly have a grade #2 ( about quarter of inch) cut all over. I like the no comb get-up and go convenience. I have noticed a lot of near balding guys have short hair (grade #2 and #3) to kind of hide the fact their balding. A couple of my friends cut their own hair with clippers set to #2. I tried doing my own once, never again, they make it look so easy on youtube. Now, my friend zipps my hair off making it a cheap deal.
Off topic. Just cause Boweser is a conservative and still remotely something to do with hair: Anyways, I have long, curly, strawberry blonde hair and I get a lot of comments about it.
I tried letting mine grow out, but it looked pretty ratty. In the past I've left my style to my barber, and she did a good job, but it was still a hassle to keep it looking respectable. I've been thinking about getting it cut super short for a long time, but I wasn't sure how the people around me would react to the new look. Now I'm happy I did get it chopped and will keep it short from now on. So did I when I was a teenager. But it turned brown and lost its curl with age.
I went to the barber for my buzz. $10.00 isn't a fortune to pay. Also, she trims my eyebrows and ear hairs, which saves me the trouble of doing it myself.

As my hair grew thin on top I started cutting my own hair. Initially I went with the #2 as well. It was easy to do and I didn't particularly like the way it was looking before the #2 so I went with it and it was easier to take care of. Eventually I realized, for me, that it looked better a little longer. The problem was it was still shorter than I had worn it for most of my life and now my hair stood up in the back where it hadn't before (as there was less weight to hold it down). That's when I "discovered" hair product, which I had never used before. I now use some water based "hair wax" that isn't shiny, washes out easily and does just enough to keep the hair down to allow me to have hair that is a little longer. When I started cutting my own hair, the kit I got also includes an eyebrow attachment (guard) and I bought a small battery powered nose hair/ear hair trimmed so I can do everything the barber would have done. The kit also included a battery powered trimmer for the sides/back along with the electric trimmer/guards for the rest of the hair. I started using an old Gillette safety razor and blades, a shaving brush, and some actual shaving creme (in a jar). Now, I actually enjoy shaving.
Shaving has always felt like chore. I never enjoyed shaving. The only reason I ever shaved was because of the expectations of others. I don'y mind wearing a beard, but I find it necessary to cut it back when it gets too bushy. I can trim my beard faster than I could ever shave my face. A shower feels good, and I couldn't sleep at night without first taking a shower. My issue was that my hair would slowly become unwieldy during the day. It looked fine when I arrived at work, but eventually look wild near the end of the day. Short hair looks cleaner and should prove less trouble. I've never invested much into hair products. I use a bar of soap on my hair. I did purchase a new beard trimmer on Amazon yesterday, and it has various attachments. I don't think I want to cut my own hair, though. I also like supporting the Asian gals who cut my hair. I would buy disposables.
I used to do that and that contributed to me hating shaving. It's kind of like doing a job around your own house using decent tools...you don't mind it. Go to someone else's house where they ask you to fix something simple and all they have are cheap or inappropriate tools and you get the job done but don't really enjoy it. Plastic, lightweight razors that you have to push into your skin before the blade gets exposed enough to shave isn't fun. Using a more substantial "tool" which requires some technique and results in a better result is more fun. Although, I couldn't go more than a few days with facial hair or it would drive me crazy much like not taking a shower. One benefit of cutting your own hair is that it is much like shaving. You can do it anytime you want so your hair never gets to that stage where you feel like you have to get a haircut. It's just always about the same.
That's probably true. Nonetheless, I'm much happier not worrying about it completely. I trim my beard about once a month. I understand that some guys can't go without shaving. And that's fine, too. It's just not for me.
I can live with it & I could easily live without it. If I wake & find it all gone, it will not make a significant difference to me. I keep it clean. I do not care the least bit what anyone else thinks about my hair. I prefer people to be clean. Other than that, I do not care at all what they do or do not do with their hair or what it looks like or how much they have. <>
Haven't had mine cut in well over 15 years. It grew to a length (barely shoulder length) and doesn't get any longer. I keep it pulled back in a ponytail and forget about it. Wash it about 3 times a week, and trim my beard about once every two weeks. Don't know if I can get much more maintenance free than that.
