New study claims that cow farts may be a much big factor

    https://www.morningticker.com/2017/10/massive-global-warming-discovery-shocks-scientists/
Farting cows produce a large amount of CH4
The authors re-evaluated the data used to calculate IPCC 2006 CH4 emission factors resulting from enteric fermentation in dairy cows and other cattle, and manure management from dairy cows, other cattle and swine. They show that estimating livestock CH4 emissions with the revised emissions factors, created in this study, results in larger emission estimates compared to calculations made using IPCC 2006 emission factors for most regions, although emission estimates varied considerably by region.

If you are conscious about global warming reduce the consumption of meat.

Notice that this is a re-evaluation of the size of a previously known contributor to greenhouse gases.

This is yet another in the long series of incoming demonstrations that the IPCC has been consistently lowballing the various factors and influences, and therefore the likely trends and consequences, of accumulating waste gas emissions on global climate.

The IPCC estimates have been conservative, moderate to a fault, and the opposite of alarmist, all along.

Well we got to have our beef right?

Typically, when we perceive no immediate and imminent threat to our way of life we do little to nothing to alter our way of life to prevent certain destruction of our way of life. We have been talking about fighting global warming/climate change for over 30 years. You see how well that has turned out.

I thought there was a story about 6 or more months ago where someone (in California?) had developed products that were every bit as good as meat products (taste wise).

I can't seem to jog my memory or I would put a link.

Maybe someone knows what I am on about.

It may come to that in the future. There could be a tax on meat products if the global warming situation seems to be getting chaotically out of hand (if it isn't already)

Even Ronald Reagan knew about cow farts except he used them to belittle genuine concerns .

Actually, up to 95% of the methane comes out as belches.
These guys should do their research.

    Agreed

Think this is the meat substitute I was thinking of

Or, why not just raise the cattle in indoor areas where we can harvest the methane and use it for power generation?

Cows are vegetarians and they're causing the problem. We need to eat them faster.

Sure, why not? It's no more ridiculous an idea than "clean coal" or "clean oil pipelines" after all.

I can see the headlines, er, I mean tweets, now - "God-Emperor Trump announces new green initiative to solve global cow fart crisis!"

And what about the over 7 billion Human farts? Doesn't that count for something?

I'm sure ranchers will have no problems with bringing the grass to the cows, rather than turning them loose in the pasture and letting them go to it.

    No.

"...globally we pass something like 400 million liters methane every day.
One cow is estimated to burp 100-400 liters methane per day when it ruminates. The hundreds of millions cows emit maybe 400 billion liters methane per day. That is thousand (1000) times the amount we humans are passing."

*sigh* I guess a [/sarcasm] tag is going to be necessary anymore...

Though, in truth... if the options are "Raise cattle indoors where these greenhouse gasses can be contained/recycled" or "Stop raising cattle altogether because the environmental changes have left the grazing lands as arid badlands where nothing grows" ... well, a drop in profits is better than a cessation of profits, right?

How about "raise cattle by grazing, but limit the grazing so the fields are not destroyed?" That would mean a reduction (but not elimination) of beef production, and since price is set by supply, farmers won't feel it as much.

Is this true? I know sheep will graze a field so hard that it can kill the grass, but I thought cows were easier on their pastures. Are you sure nothing can grow, or farmers don't let stuff grow (in their cow pastures)?
