Just finished the entire Mitch Rapp series of books (one of them was recently made into a film - the film is way less good, with the exception of a sadly-wasted Michael Keaton, than the book and the books aren't that brilliant) and now part way through Pigliucci's Nonsense on Stilts.

I'm still reading it, it's good so far. I was struck by a thought when reading the part where they ride the horse carousel at the 'House on the Rock'. One of the carousel tunes was 'The Blue Danube'.

Well, Here's my great thought... When making the movie '2001 Space Odyssey', did they get the idea to use the 'Blue Danube' because the Space Station V was revolving like an old fashion carousel playing waltzing music? Can't find any info on why the 'Space Odyssey' makers chose 'The Blue Danube'.

Originally, the movie was to have an original score by Alex North. North actually composed music meant to be used in the film. You can hear the opening score as it would have sounded here:

The music used in the end came about in a bit of an unusual way. At a certain point in the film's production, MGM was getting anxious, and to ease their concerns, Kubrick showed them some finished footage with classical music as the background to act as "guide music". In the end, he decided to not use the originally composed score and used the guide music instead.

I glad they did go with Kubrick guide version. North's version ( your link ) of the opening music seems to dull or weaken the impact of the 'Sprach Zarathustra' version actually used in the film. And the 'The Blue Danube' almost seems as if it was written for the film.
