I have already shown you an example that falsifies your assertion, proving that it is not self-evident. Defend it.
tell me "Dave" what are you doing right now? trying to convince me that im wrong and you are right. right? is it because that is your purpose? spreading your knowledge? its what we all do
Again: Glad you've decided to start discussing. Again: I am also trying to watch a TV show right now. I am also trying clip my nails. To think that "doing something" must be equated to "that something being one's purpose in life", is a non sequitur.
i dont think you understood what i just said, if spreading your knowledge isnt important why are you so adamant about it?
I never said anything about importance. You observed me doing something, and wrongly equated that with that something being my purpose. This can be shown to be false, since I do lots of somethings, none of which are my purpose in life. There's no logic to your premise-conclusion.
akoreamerican - do you actually have any way to refute what Dave said? Burden of proof is on you, as Dave already provided his... so, yeah...
we do lots of things yes, mostly to keep us alive, to keep living for what? to gain knowledge (improving ourselves). and we are compelled to spread this knowledge, as soon as we know of something "cool" or new we cant help but to tell someone. you just said you re watching tv. thats gaining knowledge. keeping your self clean by clipping nails.... to stay healthy... so you live longer.... to gain more knowledge
It certainly is not. Although if you think that TC is tantamount to knowledge, it might explain where you got some of your tortured logic. Your argument is circular. If you decide to interpret anything someone does as ultimately serving a purpose you define, that is what is called "begging the question" another logical fallacy. It is also a trivial truism. Consider: I assert something like "There is only one of any given thing in the universe." You: "I have two oranges." Me: "No, you have one pair of oranges." You: "There are seven billion people on the planet." Me: "There is one populated planet". You see, my assertion is a truism. It is trivial and useless. As is yours for the same reason.
I can't imagine what the point would be. You will simply sew a train of faulty logic out of whole cloth, ending up whereever you've decided it should end up. That is not how logic works. See logical fallacies: circular logic, begging the question, truism.
well i guess im right then, watching tv is to gain knowledge and clipping nails is to stay healthy... unless you give me a different reason
As Kitt made clear, the onus is on you to defend your assertion. Since your assertion is unilateral - it attempts to speak for everyone, it is an all-or-nothing proposition, not to mention asserting things it cannot possibly know - you have the burden to show there are no exceptions. You have not come even close to meeting that burden.
and what are these exceptions? your hedonist? they have no meaning in life. they will be dead and only knowledge that will survive of them is that they existed once. theres no meaning in life for them... theirs is a meaning in death
