I have zero sympathy for animal hoarders. I also think it's unfair that they get off or given a pass for what is essentially animal abuse/neglect.

They are not hoarding these animals for the animal's benefit but for their sense of loneliness, ownership or property. if they cared, they would make sure they had good living conditions or be honest with themselves they can't provide that. instead, they expect sympathy just because they took them in or feed them once in awhile.

I have no real argument with your thesis. Nonetheless, you seem not to have investigated this issue very thoroughly. There are lots of people in the USA who do, indeed, keep a large number of cats (and in fact, it's usually cats, not dogs or guinea pigs), but have large enough homes to avoid crowding.

They take very good care of these creatures, whom they regard as family. Their houses are cleaner than mine, their dozens of litter boxes are changed every couple of days so there's no smell, their animals are bathed and groomed more often than the dog and cats my wife and I live with, and they're well socialized to other humans so no one has to worry about being bitten or scratched. (Rubbed to death, well maybe.

A couple of years ago, the local police were called by a neighbor to a home full of cats. They left after ten minutes, remarking that they wished that people WITHOUT cats would be so clean and healthy!
