So, you're continuing to believe that "torus" is what Kirk said? Not "course"? What makes you think this is true?
I don't think that it is true I KNOW that it is true . As I suggested if you netflix or another way of watching the episode , then do it .
See photo of square donut Has 4 corners Slightly rounded But it's a torus A square coffee cup would work the same Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
In at least two online plot synopses, the phrase reported is "a spiral course". http://memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/The_Corbomite_Maneuver_(episode) That might be true, though "right angle course" sounds plausible too. But I'll bet money it isn't "right angle torus".
Well, technically it isn't. A torus is defined as rotating a circle around a central point. But OK, now it's a mangled torus. In a series that, as pointed out by the OP, employs little more than simplistic 2D motion in space, Kirk is not going to start delivering geometric tactical plans. All moot of course. Post 11 has it right; he says "right angle course."
That has nothing to do with what Kirk said. Go watch it again. BTW, don't know if you are watching the new remastered version. It's is conceivable that they updated the special effects. I don't think it the tractor beam was toroidal in the original series. Regardless, they did not update the audio track.
It is all to do with what Kirk said . The reason Kirk wanted the " right angle torus " manuver was to break the tractor beam of the ship that had the Enterprise in its grip . The tractor beam is torus beam which surrounded the Enterprise . And don't forget it worked . Kirk freed the Enterprise from the tractor beam .
I just watched it. Kirk says "I want a right-angled course." Also, the tractor beam is not visible. So that's twice no torus. If there is any doubt remaining, I will be happy to upload the scene.
You are right , I just watched it again , Kirk did say a " right angle course " . My apologies to all . river
Go back a few posts to where I was confused about the wording about the Enterprise going into (NOT at) a right angle torus So yes the torus has to be square Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
Are you aware a topologist is a person who cannot tell the difference between a coffee mug and a donut—so goes a joke about a little-known scientific field crowned Tuesday with a Nobel Physics Prize https://www.google.com.au/amp/www.g...offee-mug-a-donut-topology-explains-it/story/ Have a look at the illustrations of the coffee cup as a torus Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
Michael 345 was contributing all along without base information, till Janus resolved the issue. Nice to see river closing it honorably.
