In the original series of Star Trek , in episode " S1:E11 " The Corbomite Maneuver " .

Kirk goes into a " right angle torus " to get out of the tracter beam , holding the Enterprise .

My question is , how do we visualize this , right angle torus ?

What is the ship doing , physically ? In space .

I thought that Star Trek was liner , two dimensional . Because visually it never went up or down , three dimensionally .

But listening more closely the ship moved in three dimensional space . Interesting .

You find it interesting that the Starship Enterprise was moving in 3 dimensional space? You previously thought it was only moving in 2 dimensions?

As a movie, it could only move in 2 dimensions but it was depicting movement in outer space so how could it surprise you that it was moving in 3 dimensions?

    Square Donut

Each corner is a Right Angle of a torus

Oh boy you are making my 3 neurones which makes up my brain really work hard

    The best they guess

the Enterprise goes inside of the torus

    (into one of the corners)

    makes 3 turns

traveling back to the corner it entered

where the tracter beam becomes entangled in itself

    freeing up the Enterprise

    My neurones want coffee

Yeah well ....you know , doesn't really explain it .

The Enterprise didn't go " into " the tractor beam , it was , engulfted by it .

So there is no specific " corner " persay .

I'm still thinking upon this myself , I'm not leaving up to you to explain it to me , I'm just searching for other thinking upon this , " right angle torus " maneuver.

I still do appreciate your response .

The corner is the corner of the torus not the tractor beam

The Enterprise may very well be engulfed by the beam

As it goes into the corner of the square torus it drags the beam behind it

After 3 turns it is heading back to its entry point

As arrives at the corner where it entered the tractor beam entangles with itself

May be the Enterprise exits where it entered

If you find another explanation I am interested

    Thanks

The tractor beam is the torus , in which the Enterprise is in . The tractor beam creates the torus .

So what I think the maneuver of the right angle torus does is stress the beam from a two dimensional plane , level with the ship , or both are on the same plane , but because the Enterprise goes at right angles to the plane (three dimensional) , weakens the tractor beam . Because the full power of the beam is when , what is captured by the beam remains on the same plane , as the ship that is producing the tractor beam .

    Thats my thinking anyway

That's not my understanding of this statement

    which seems to imply

    a right angle torus

    and

    a tractor beam

Otherwise it can be written Enterprise goes into a tractor beam to get out of a tractor beam

    A clearer presentation might be

Kirk goes into a MANOEUVRE called

    a right angle torus

And I have no idea what that manoeuvre would look like
    .
If my neurones come up with a idea will post it

Well .. the Enterprise was already in the tractor beam , the ship was captured for awhile .

The term "right angle torus" is never used in the episode; Kirk orders a "right angle course". The idea being that that by always applying thrust at 90 degrees to the tractor beam of the ship trying to tow it, the additional strain put on the tractor beam would eventually drain the towing ship's energy reserves.

    Got it

But my square donut might be a winner of someone would patent the idea and send a little kick back in royalties please

Here's about as close as I came in terms of making a square donut.

Entertaining discussion, but are we forgetting that we are discussing "SCIENCE FICTION" here . . . . . . the proscribed manouver is most likely NOT REAL! Belief that such a manouver is real is somewhat akin to "believing in something without obserevable evidence" . . . . . . . u-h-h-h-h does God ring a bell?

    Yes it was.

A few hours ago that watched the episode and that exact wording , " right angle torus " . Never heard of it before . But there you go .

    Perhaps folks are confusing 'course' with 'torus' . . . . they DO rhyme, it seems . . . . . Right angle course v. Right angle torus . . . . this issue arises frequently on the Forum (confusion) . . . . But, as Rosanna Rosannadanna (on SNL) said: " . . . . . . NEVER MIND!"

No confusion just listen more closely .

    Very good with a A+

Are you aware a topologist is a person who cannot tell the difference between a coffee mug and a donut—so goes a joke about a little-known scientific field crowned Tuesday with a Nobel Physics Prize

    https://www.google.com.au/amp/www.g...offee-mug-a-donut-topology-explains-it/story/

    Exactly

But we can discuss not real manoeuvres

in the same way as a not real god

Thank you! I thought I was going bonkers reading this thread.

First, if the phrase "right angle torus" were used in Star Trek, I doubt I'd forget it.

Second, a torus has no corners. What are y'all talking about going into the corner of a torus???
