I'm unsure whether or not I have a pet. Does a mean grizzly bear-like mother-in-law count?

Do you put out bowls of food and water for her?

Is there a low level trampoline bed in the laundry next to a litter tray?

The definition of a "pet" is a non-human animal that is treated--at least to the extent practical and possible--like a member of the family.

Since your mother-in-law is (presumably) 100% human, she cannot be counted as a family pet. I'm sure you have come up with other nicknames for her over the years.

We have two cats and a dog. When I was younger and still living with my previous wife, we had seven dogs, three cats, and several kinds of parrots. We also had a black-headed grosbeak who had fallen out of her nest. She survived the fall but suffered some injuries. She could fly around slowly inside the house like a diesel helicopter.

I have a bird feeder. Do fifty million sparrows count as pets?

I have a cat that was originally a stray.

First I named her 'Kitty.' Then I called her 'Stupid cat.' Now I call her 'Fuck Off Cat!' I swear she deliberately tries to trip me up.

Only if you have individual names for them all

Most of them are named George. It's a common name among English sparrows and elm trees.

It's also one of my names

Guess I always knew I was common

So if you're walking down a tree-lined street with the birds singing and somebody says, "Hi, George," don't assume they're talking to you.

    I'll remember that

Not sure if the birds here are sparrows but they do look like them

We have a dog who has a penchant for chewing up stuff: paperback books, shoes, underwear, pop cans, tv remotes... Fortunately she hasn't taken an interest in our furniture. Enjoys taking things she shouldn't and running from us when we try to get it back. She could chase her ball all day. Dogs have personality. I suppose cats do too, just not as much.

You've never been owned by a cat.

You should probably avoid petting your mother-in-law.
