    Please think of a number. Add one to this number, then subtract the number you were thinking of minus one.

    The answer is two!

    Put simply: (x+1)-(x-1)

    ...it is the question that drives us.

    This is what physics and math have devolved into in today's educational system, at least here in the US. Except that most HS kids nowadays couldn't write down the descriptive "a = (x + 1) - (x - 1)", much less solve it.

    Are you serious? There are lots of variants of this. But they all come down to subtracting the number thought of, somewhere along the line so as to confuse the victim, so that all that remains is due to the extra numbers provided by the questioner.
