No they didn't. They used trial and error, which science later refined into the scientific method.

I believe Eratosthenes predates them by a few centuries.

Your confused again. We were talking the scientific method, not the roundness of the earth.

They certainly used trial and error, and that is part and parcel of what science is and the scientific method, even though they may not have realised it. See? Just as I have been telling you for yonks: Simply an application of logic and common sense!

The roundness of the earth was established by the scientific method.

He was actually the first that came to mind.
    I loved his methodology!

Angle of sunbeam and the gnomons (vertical sticks) is shown at Alexandria, which allowed Eratosthenes' estimates of radius and circumference of Earth.

No it wasn't. It was established thru simple measurements.

No..the scientific method wasn't formulated until medieval times. Simple trial and error was sufficient. Which doesn't say much for the scientific method.

Sure after a great deal of trial and error we find the scientific method works best.

Actually trial and error works best. Always has..

Thats what I said and we end up with scientific method as being best.
    I am glad we agree.

You appear in denial. [again] It was without question a simple application of science and the scientific method..I suggest you read up on how he achieved his results.

As I said, man utilised the scientific method when he climbed down out of the trees, including trial and error, which is part of the scientific method. He may not have realised it in such words [as you apparently do not also] but that's certainly what he was doing.

No..just trial and error. You DO remember what the scientific method is don't you?

That's how you prove things via the scientific method.

I suggest you familiarize yourself with the simple act of taking measurements.

Nope..measurement was sufficient in this case.

I suggest you familiarise yourself with his methodology in taking those measurements and the hypothesis he was trying to achieve.

Simple logical inference. We do it every day. It's not the scientific method.

Trial and error is part and parcel of the scientific method.

But we are slightly askew of the message of this thread, are we not?
You know, how science has helped reveal some of the mythical beliefs early humans had, and the fact that it has shown belief in any divine creator is not really needed, and that you, me, everyone on Earth, the Earth, Sun and Solar System are adequately explained as actually star stuff.
Mind boggling that science has enabled us to achieve such revelations, I'm sure you'll agree.
