Hi all. I just supported an exciting expedition to a mystery island. Thought you might be interested as well

The team behind the expedition to 'The Eye’ can use your support - and in return offer you to be part of this breakthrough expedition aimed to reveal the mystery of a strange moving island, The Eye (live stream).
“We have discovered a mysterious island near the Parana river, which, intriguingly, moves and rotates on its own axis. Besides, it features a neat circular structure bordered by another perfectly circular streak of water. It’s something REAL and accounts for several supernatural stories bearing connections to UFOs and other paranormal aspects. To some paranormal expert the circular structure of The Eye bears some connection with UFO while to some, 2 perfect circles signify God on Earth!

Nobody knows its history and no one has dared to explore it. Inspired by the enigma surrounding it, we are looking forward to go out on a groundbreaking expedition to unveil its secrets and our thrilling revelations would be presented in a documentary. The moving island can be checked for real through Google Earth.

I would urge readers NOT to support any project that is not backed by a reputable research organisation.

So far there are no corroborated details of the existence of this alleged phenomenon, nor any details of what organisation is involved in making the exploratory trip.

How does one define "reputability" for a research organization? Their reputation? What if it's a new organization? Is there is a list of reputable organizations you can provide us with?

Irrelevant period. The link gives a prettified 404.

    As it should.

    This is way cool.

Here it is in Google Maps:
    https://www.google.com.ar/maps/place/34°15'07.8"S 58°49'47.0"W/@-34.2498515,-58.8316739,1515m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x0!8m2!3d-34.252167!4d-58.829722?hl=es

Guys, this isn't some fakery, it's the same phenomenon as ice circles - natural formations of floating ice in slow-moving water that, due to constant erosion, form highly circular, floating, rotating islands.

(Repeat: natural. It has nothing to do with aliens or crop circles).

Ice circles have been reproduced in small-scale setups in a lab, with no weirdness at all, just the right combination of water flow, canal-shape and surface ice. (Watched TV show where they set up a small scale river, and floated bergs down it. It worked exactly as predicted.)

This tropical one is really nothing more than a raft of vegetation bobbing in an eddy - writ large.

So, what's happening at the Eye is that there's a slow-flowing river below the vegetation. A vegetation island either grew from a small size or is accreted from stuff floating downstream (not sure which) The rotation (from the current) grinds off any lobes, eventually resulting in a circular raft.

It's rare to have just the right circumstances, geography and location for it to occur, and which is why we don't see them a lot.

It would never have occurred to me that it could exist in circumstance other than ice - but of course - floating foliage would do the same thing.

At what parallel line is that from the equator? What temperature does the water reaches . I believe the Parana starts in a tropical climate

I assume you mean latitude. That would be 34 degrees south for The Eye.

I'm not sure what you mean. Are you referring to the Eye or to the ice circles?

The Eye is not dependent on water temperature. Ice circles are.

My only objection to the thread is that it seems like a drive by post with the intention to boost awareness for a kick-starter campaign. A dodgy one.

Otherwise it's a nice example of fluid dynamics in certain conditions.

I wonder if it's transient. Ice circles certainly are, by necessity. But this would have no automatic expiry date.

I want to find some other articles.

This is an oblique view. I do not know if this is the same one.

This angle has some oddities that raise questions.
I have to assume the camera angle is tilted, and that it's not actually on a slope.
I think the landmarks make its size and position confusing. It makes it look like there is indeed a long slope down to those trees in the distance.

What's surprising though, is that I espected it to be much more swampy. Hard to find plausibility in a river running through that pond under the island.
    Here's another:

In the opening was mentioned Parana river So I questioned the location of the Parana river and were the object was, because at some place at the Parana you could not have Ice . Now that you mentioned the location , The object is more less at the latitude of Memphis and the lowest temperature in Rosario is about 36 F. so it is possible to have such lagunes . Since the area is a big cattle pasture. I will assume the Island is an accumulation of weed that floats

In New England this is pretty common. As a lake gets older and older, and the nutrient load increases, at some point there is so much debris on the surface (dead reeds, dead lily pads, pond scum etc) along with water and nutrients that plants start growing on _it._ You often end up with a lake that looks very small; it hasn't shrunk, but the water near the shores is now covered with an almost solid mat of vegetation.

It looks like that is what happened here.

Thanks, this is very interesting. I did not know about ice circles (suppose that's the sort of thing a Canadian would know

). How did you find this Google image and is there anything more I can read about it?

(But certainly this suggests the OP was a load of credulous woo and hype, if not an actual scam, just as it appeared to be.)

Yes. I was expecting something more akin to a mandrake swamp.

This veg circle pond needs to have inflow and outflow. That's what causes the rotation, and shapes the island and the pond's borders.

    I only found them recently. They're a recently-discovered and poorly-understood phenom.

This is the first article I found. It listed the coords.

Further searching for The Eye and Parana River turns up various videos, from which I made those screen grabs.

Aha. So then I presume it is you that has made the connection with ice circles. Maybe you could write a paper on it!

Glad to see actual discussion going on despite attempts by some to derail this into a pedantic dick waving contest.

How does the Earth Science section sound for a new home for this thread?
