    Bowser...
Can you post your personal details here on this site now...name, address, phone number. Because we are all nice people here, you can trust us surely ? Put that info on the first line of your post, if it's not on top line , I won't read further. Why do I want this info...maybe you will become 'famous' with your site, and I can then supply your personal info to others. Remember first line, if it's not there I won't read further. If the first word is a swear word...

    Just for clarity:

Bowser is not claiming to be creating a forum that suits his needs. So the 'practice what you preach' suggestion doesn't apply.

He intends to allow White Supremacy propaganda too, but that doesn't mean he intends to practice it himself.

We must have cross posted...I edited that out.
Bowser seems to be not sure of the outcome of him allowing doxing.
    Bowser...
"I'm wondering if it will detract from the forum or encourage more open dialogue".

And, as I said, If Bowser's site becomes 'famous' , I can supply info on him.
In other words, would he like his own personal info shown. If not , why not?

If someone is clearly abusing anonymity then IMHO 'doxing' is appropriate.

I think you have have the wrong idea. Either that, or I do.

It is not about doxing other members of the forum.

It is about members of the forum doxing other people at their whim - political figures, CEOs, celebrities, etc. whomever the members feel they want to lash out at in the world, or send a message to.

And besides, doxing is never appropriate.

The anonymity (of the Internet) is relatively new. Before the net any unsigned letters would invariably be either discarded or passed to the police. Anonymous phone calls were invariably malicious.

If you use the analogy of math, one's personal opinions, one's biography, and one's affiliations, have no impact on being able to properly solve a math equation. It is all about skills in math. Math, like logic, is a self standing phenomena.

It would be irrational to assume that because someone eats meat, or has a certain attitude about global warming; doxing, this is sufficient to void a valid solution to an equation. This might appear to be work if one is not skilled at math, such that a right or wrong solution, might be relative and look the same. At that point, one might be looking for a filter of the mind, from the doxing data, to anticipate whether to agree with their math opinion; oxymoron.

On the other hand, not everything on the internet is logical and rational. There is much more group talking points, opinions and deception. This type of data is not self standing, but it is often dependent on filters of the mind, opinions and attitudes, which are often emotional and subjective. Doxing might be a way to make this type of system more honest, since if you know affiliation, you be made aware where this is heading.

The pitfall is when doxing and the subjectivity of the prestige affect, is being used to judge a rational analysis, which is free standing. For example, Joe may claim that 1+1=2 ,but because his doxing data implies he is from the wrong political party, or lives in a poor neighborhood, his math has to be wrong, due to low subjective valance; bad feeling about him.

If we assume a rule of no doxing, this assumes a higher standard is being used; free speech. Free speech is free standing; free from prosthesis. When speech is dependent on some type of subjective prestige; doxing, speech is not free, but has a cost; cost of the scaffolding. You will not be judged by your words, but by the subjective pretension of scaffolding. A cost is added, since 1+1=2 may not be valid, unless you PC smile and kiss butt, properly. It may be necessary to add scaffolding to something self standing; extra cost.

The problem this can created is, many people, like politicians, learn the art of scaffolding. Their options can be irrational and deception, but because it looks proper at a subjective level; scaffolding, any people assume it is valid. This dumbs down the masses, until only scaffolding matters.

Trump is not good at scaffolding because he wants people to look at his free speech; self standing. The system is based on scaffolding, with speech for a price; money and donors setting the scaffolding. If you look at PC, this is scaffolding which speech has to fit into. If it does not fit, it is assumed wrong. This is backwards, but appeals to the irrational and is a useful tool for the deceptive.

Unless that person has willingly shared their personal information, doxing is a form of criminal harassment. It's not a free speech issue.

Probably not actually a crime in most jurisdictions. You might regard it as antisocial behaviour which would normally be what prompted the doxing. Clearly you can only dox a person once - but having done so it at least alerts people to the fact that they are (or may be) dealing with multiple manifestations of the same individual - at least one of which is 'real'.

Any other areas of life where anonymity is appropriate? Driving would be simplified - no insurance required. Medicine? And so on.

Here's my issue with it. For a price you can buy information on pretty much anyone...online. Our personal information is bought and sold by private companies all the time. I know this to be true because I get calls nearly every day and junk mail too.

You can get that information for $9.95 online. All you need is my name and age and the city where I live.

LOL The point is, our personal information is out there. It's used like a commodity.

I think you miss my point. I'm not advocating doxing, just questioning it's legality.

I admit my idea of 'doxing' doesn't amount to anything more than name and town/city. In the case considered by spidergoat (above) the doxer also revealed bank account details and more - not quite what I had in mind when I suggested the practice had its place on the Internet.

From the source given by spidergoat ( https://www.justice.gov/usao-dc/pr/...n-internet-offenses-including-doxing-swatting )
Islam carried on for 6 months (or more) because he wasn't easily traced or 'doxed'.
Catch 22 - trying to catch a doxer without doxing him.

I looked up the term "Swatting," which seems to be the practice of reporting a crime (false crime) that involves a targeted individual (victim). Yeah, I've heard of this, but I didn't know they had a name for it.

I don't know how to connect your user name to it. And you don't want to share, which is understandable. So it's not very relevant. I expect to get junk mail, I don't expect some internet cretin to show up there.
